RECAP: Women’s Indoor Track & Field achieves solid start to the season at Bison Opener

Slezak, Calamia crack 60-meter Top 10; Malcolm notches two of SU’s 12 PSAC qualifiers

The Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team completed its first meet of the 2025-26 season on Saturday with competition in the Bison Opener at the friendly confines of Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse.

The meet was Shippensburg's first chance to achieve Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships qualifiers and the Raiders did just that – finishing the meet with 12 (eight on the track, four in the field).

Izzy Slezak and Emily Calamia each cracked Shippensburg's all-time Top 10 in the 60-meter dash.

Slezak, in her collegiate debut, qualified for the finals with a prelims time of 7.81 seconds and tied for sixth in the finals after crossing the finish line in 7.84 seconds. The performance ranks her eighth in school history.

Calamia entered the day with a PR of 8.19 seconds in the 60 – a best that was achieved in her collegiate debut as a freshman in 2022. Competing in her ninth collegiate 60-meter dash, Calamia not only broke the eight-second mark for the first time but shattered her PR by .32 seconds – posting a time of 7.87 seconds that ranks her 10th in school history.

Nineteen women broke the eight-second mark in the 60-meter prelims; finals required a time of 7.82 seconds or faster.

Madison Malcolm picked up conference qualifiers in both of her events, pacing the Raiders in the 400 meters with a second-place time of 1:00.07 and finishing sixth in the 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 9.09 seconds. Malcolm reached the hurdle finals with a prelim time of 9.04 seconds, which is just .07 seconds off her PR.

Half of SU's PSAC qualifiers on the track came from the 60-meter hurdles. Linda Hussein and Layla Duggan were among those competing in their first collegiate meet Saturday; they posted identical times of 9.44 seconds.

Camryn Pyle was in the immediate vicinity with a time of 9.45 seconds – just .03 seconds off her PR. Pyle also competed in the seldom-contested 300 meters, posting a time of 44.64 seconds.

Calamia (1:00.65) and Melanie Barger (1:01.68) came close to PSAC qualifying time in the 400, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

There was limited action in the mid-distance and distance events, but a major highlight was Mary Stoltz posting a second-place finish in the 800 meters. Stoltz, in her collegiate debut, crossed the finish line with a PSAC qualifier of 2:22.09. It's the fastest time by a Raider in the indoor 800 since Kyra Gerber in 2023.

Shaela Kruskie and Grace Nesko improved their indoor bests in the mile to 5:24.08 and 5:28.13 respectively. Lilah Drager improved her indoor best in the 800 to 2:32.79.

Ashley Laukus and Allyson Richwine each cleared 5 feet, 5 inches (1.65 meters) in the high jump to finish 1-2 in the standings. Laukus came with three-quarters of an inch of her personal-best clearance, while Richwine was just a quarter of an inch shy of her best. Both women had three attempts at the next height (5 feet, 7 inches (1.70 meters)) but were unable to get over the bar.

Carissa Bender checked her PSAC qualifier in the pole vault off the list with a seventh-place clearance of 11 feet, 1 ¾ inches (3.40 meters).

Highlighting the throws was Lauren Bellows, who picked up a PSAC qualifier in the weight with a top mark of 48 feet, 2 inches (14.68 meters).

The conclusion of the meet was a photo finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The 'A' squad of Calamia, Duggan, Barger and Malcolm crossed the finish line in 4:09.91 but was edged by Lincoln by .01 seconds.

Shippensburg will take a few weeks off for final exams and the semester break before returning to competition Saturday, Jan. 17 at Alvernia.
