Kaitlin Calvello began the 2025-26 season for the Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team with a new personal best and a second-place finish in the pentathlon on Friday night at Bucknell's Bison Opener held inside Gerhard Fieldhouse.
Calvello posted a score of 2,991 points, second-only to the 3,102 points of IUP's Renee Simmonds (last year's third-place finisher in the pentathlon at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championships). That score receives a 22-point boost with the conversion of Calvello's 800-meter time (2:35.61) from the Gerhard Fieldhouse flat track to a NCAA-regulated banked/oversized track, resulting in a final total of 3,013 points.
Her day started with a PR in the 60-meter hurdles, a seventh-place finish of 9.91 seconds that exceeded her previous best by .16 seconds. She followed with a high jump of 4 feet, 7 inches (1.40 meters).
In the shot put, Calvello delivered an indoor PR of 31 feet, 9 ½ inches (9.69 meters) that was the No. 3 mark of the competition. It exceeded her previous best by 15 inches.
She closed the night by posting the top performance in each of the last two events. Her long jump of 17 feet, 1 ¼ inches (5.21 meters) paced the field, while her 800-meter run shattered her PR by more than four seconds.
Calvello's score makes her the 10th Raider in school history to break the 3,000-point mark in the pentathlon. Her score was just enough to surpass Sara Wagner, who scored 2,996 points at the 2012 PSAC Indoor Championships that was contested at Edinboro, which has an oversized track.
While Calvello completed her third career pentathlon Friday night, freshman
Kendra Depew finished her first. Depew's final score of 1,499 points was highlighted by her opening 60-meter hurdles time of 11.03 seconds. She did not record a score in the long jump.
Saturday's competition for the women begins at 11 a.m. with the weight throw and the long jump. Other field events will follow, with the action on the track set to start at 1 p.m.
