Shippensburg University Athletics is mourning the loss of men's basketball assistant coach Dave Miller, who passed away Wednesday morning after a short battle with cancer.

SU extends its condolences to Lois Miller, his wife of more than 55 years, and his family and friends. The couple has a son, Brian, a daughter-in-law, Tina, and two grandchildren, Bryce and Jordyn.

Miller was in his 13th season as a member of the Shippensburg University men's basketball coaching staff, having joined the Raiders in 2013 upon the hiring of head coach Chris Fite.

He has been a part of 198 victories, nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament appearances (including the 2016-17 PSAC Championship season) and three NCAA Tournament berths.

"Coach Miller was an integral part of the Shippensburg Basketball Program and all that we have built here," head coach Chris Fite said. "He has been with us from Day 1. There weren't many days over the past 13 years that he and I didn't speak about the team, recruiting or game preparation."

For Miller, basketball was life. A native of Sharon, Pa., he was a 1968 graduate of Edinboro. He joined the Fighting Scots as a walk-on and eventually earned a scholarship. By his senior season, Miller was a team captain who guided the Fighting Scots to the 1968 PSAC Championship title and national prominence at the NAIA level.

Immediately after his graduation from college, Miller spent the final 58 years of his life coaching basketball.

Miller's journey started with 25 years as a high school coach in Maryland – first at Poolesville (1968-69 – 1980-81) and then at Walkersville (1981-82 – 1992-93). Walkersville won Maryland State Championships in 1984 and 1986 and was ranked in the Area Top 10 for 12 consecutive seasons. His overall high school coaching record was 353-212.

He then spent the next 20 years (1993-94 – 2012-13) as the head coach at Frederick (Md.) Community College – guiding the Cougars to a 347-233 record and 11 consecutive Region XX Tournament appearances. He was named the JUCO Coach of the Year in 2002 and the Region XX Coach of the Year in 2010 before being inducted into the Frederick Community College Hall of Fame in 2016.

Miller retired from Frederick Community College in March 2013, having compiled an overall record of 700-445 in his 45 years as a head coach at the two levels. Fite was hired at Shippensburg in June 2013, and Miller joined Fite's staff soon after to serve as a volunteer assistant.

In total, Miller had a part in coaching 1,476 basketball games (331 at Shippensburg, 1,145 as a head coach).

"Dave was a great coach, but more importantly, a great friend and mentor to myself, Coach Gembe, and our players," Fite said. "He was an all-around beautiful person."

His vast basketball knowledge, coaching success and athletic ability as a player led to his induction in 2003 to the Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame in Frederick and in 2005 to the Mercer County (Pa.) Hall of Fame. Miller is also a member of the Poolesville High School Hall of Fame for his coaching success and the Sharon High School Hall of Fame for his success as a player.

"Our sideline and locker room will simply not be the same without him," Fite said. "Ship Basketball and I will forever be grateful to Dave and his family. They are in our prayers."
