The Shippensburg University wrestling team staked itself out to a 14-0 lead Wednesday night and won six bouts overall as it defeated host Gettysburg, 23-15, in a dual meet held at Bream Gym.
Â
Shippensburg (1-2) won four matches by decision and scored key bonus points in two others to distance itself from Gettysburg (1-1).
Colin Marano scored a 19-4 technical fall at 125 pounds and
Nick Delp remained undefeated this season after landing a second-period pin at 165 pounds.
Â
Marano's opening victory set the tone; he led 18-4 at the expiration of the match and added a riding-time point that bumped his major decision to a technical fall.
Â
Kyle von Schmidt responded with a 10-4 decision at 133 that included two takedowns in the opening period. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period at 141,
Cole Coffin scored a reversal and rode out Brendan Callahan to post a 2-1 victory.
Â
The 149-pound bout was decided in an eventful third period. Trailing 4-1, Gettysburg's Jake Mitchell earned a takedown to even the score, but
Mike Trainor reversed him in short order. Despite an eventual escape for Mitchell, Trainor had done enough to score a 7-5 decision.
Â
Delp nearly won by fall in the first period against Justin Richey, scoring a takedown that led to a three-point near fall and a four-point near fall. After starting the second period on the bottom and escaping quickly, Delp notched his decisive takedown that led to the pin.
Â
Cole Lang was Shippensburg's sixth and final victor of the night with a 9-3 decision at 184. Lang led 4-0 after two periods but was taken down midway through the third by Joseph Dietz. Needing more points; Dietz immediately allowed an escape but Lang cemented the win with a late takedown.
Â
Of the night's three extra matches,
Calvin Lederer posted a 6-2 decision in a 149-pound bout and
Cameron Montgomery earned a 9-1 major decision in a heavyweight clash.
Â
The Bullets scored bonus points in two of their four wins, achieving a tech fall at 157 and a major decision at 174.
Â
It is the second straight season in which the two teams have had a November dual meet; last year the Bullets posted a 21-17 victory at Heiges Field House.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action at 7 p.m. Monday with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet at Millersville.
