SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team earned its third clean sheet in five matches Wednesday, holding No. 19 Bloomsburg to a scoreless draw in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at David See Field, 0-0.
Shippensburg (3-4-2, 0-2-1 PSAC East) was battered and bruised by Bloomsburg (4-0-4, 1-0-2) in a physical matchup that saw the two sides combine for six yellow cards, but did not concede.
Jack McCann made a career-high nine saves in the SU net.
Both teams saw some of its best chances in the opening stages of the match.
Less than three minutes after the opening whistle, a perfectly weighted through ball from Shippensburg's
Luke Kramer in midfield sent forward
Kyle Ganley in on goal.
Peter Punchello came off his line and fouled Ganley on the edge of the box, resulting in a yellow card. Punchello's risky decision paid off however, as
Ethan Omondi's shot on the ensuing free kick rolled just wide.
SU's great defensive effort nearly came crashing down in a matter of moments a quarter of an hour later. Miscommunication between the backline and McCann allowed the pressuring Owen Hollobaugh to pounce on a high-bouncing long ball forward. With the keeper off his line, the Bloomsburg forward stared at a wide-open net for a fraction of a second, but sent his 30-yard attempt wide.
The Raiders sent additional numbers forward to try and find a winner late, resulting only in several half chances.
Bloomsburg finished with a 9-to-1 advantage in shots on goal in the game.
Shippensburg returns to action Saturday at East Stroudsburg. Kickoff from Eiler-Martin Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
