The Shippensburg University women's basketball team was unable to mount a second-half comeback on Wednesday night as it dropped a 64-56 decision at front-running Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (7-11, 4-8 PSAC) and Lock Haven (12-5, 7-4) exchanged the lead six times in the first half as the Raiders trailed by just two points at halftime, 31-29. SU managed just nine points in the third quarter, however, and could not get closer than five points down the stretch despite shooting 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Taja Colbert led all players with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 5-of-5 at the free-throw line. Colbert played all but 17 seconds and posted double figures for the fourth straight game and for the 12th time this season.
Off the bench, freshman
Abbie Johns contributed 11 points, marking her fourth game in double figures. Junior
Makayla Foddrell was 4-of-5 from the field and scored eight points while equaling a career high with two steals.
SU was plagued by foul trouble all night – three Raiders had two or more fouls by halftime and four players had four or more fouls by the end of the game. Both Foddrell and senior
Abbie Miller fouled out.
Miller was limited to 16 minutes on the night; she finished with five points and five rebounds. Sophomore
Mia Johnson, who was assessed two fouls in the first quarter, scored eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Freshman
Michelle Olak led the Raiders with eight rebounds, which equals her career high, while sophomore
Bella Chimienti had a team-high four assists.
Lock Haven shot just 39 percent from the field but out-rebounded the Raiders 40-23, a margin that included a 17-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. The Bald Eagles had 16 second-chance points.
Reigning Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Year Alana Robinson finished the night with 11 points, six rebounds, six blocks, four assists and four steals for the Bald Eagles. Jenadia Jordan had 18 points and seven rebounds while Kiera Baughman chipped in 16 points off the bench.
Shippensburg has a bye this weekend. The Raiders will return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when they host Shepherd for Diversity Night at Heiges Field House.
