EDINBORO, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team traveled to McComb Fieldhouse and defeated host Edinboro on Friday afternoon, 107-73, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet.
The Raiders (4-3) took a break from their winter training schedule to compete against the Fighting Scots (3-2) in the annual meeting between the two teams. SU achieved seven individual victories and key scoring performances to win its final dual meet of the season.
Sophomore
Mason Koeth, junior
Nate Wauls, freshman
Josh Einolf, and sophomore
Connor Ludwig opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming 1:38.78.
Freshman
Alex Kissinger kicked off four straight individual victories for SU by competing in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Kissinger, the only swimmer in the event, paced well by posting a time of 10:51.62.
Koeth and graduate
JC Greenwood posted a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with Koeth pacing the field by nearly three seconds with his winning time of 1:47.78. Greenwood held on in the final 50 yards of the race, out-touching Edinboro's Tommy Collins by one one-hundredth of a second, 1:50.45 to 1:50.46.
Sophomore
Robbie Ferlick outshined the 50-yard freestyle field, posting a time of 21.56 seconds to take first and hit the PSAC qualifying standard (22.53).
One event later, senior
David Johnson used a remarkable opening 100 in the 200-yard IM to cruise to victory, hitting the wall at 2:02.53. Kissinger used a late surge during the freestyle portion of the race to snatch second from Boro's Christian Connell, 2:07.44 to 2:07.53.
The 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke saw Ferlick and Koeth pick up their second individual victory of the meet. Ferlick used a second split of 24.28 seconds to move past the field and win the race in 48.53 seconds. Koeth beat the field in the 100 back by nearly four seconds, posting a time of 53.37 seconds that notched a PSAC qualifying standard.
Greenwood returned to the pool to outswim the field in the 500-yard freestyle, using consistent splits to touch the wall in 5:03.41. Junior
Carter Hawkes, a newly added transfer from Lees-McRae, finished right behind Greenwood by taking second place with a time of 5:08.43.
The quartet of Johnson, Ferlick, Ludwig, and Einolf concluded the meet with an exhibition in the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:28.67.
By virtue of today's dual meet win, it marks the first winning season in terms of dual meet record since 2021, when the team posted a 4-2 record in dual meets. It also marked the final collegiate dual meet for Greenwood, Johnson,
Zaidian Van Orden, and
Nathan VanNatter.
The Raiders will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Lewisburg for the Bucknell Invitational.
