SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team ended its 2024 regular season on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-2 non-conference loss to regionally-ranked Frostburg State at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (26-19) outhit Frostburg State (33-11) by a 9-8 margin, and neither team made an error in the game in the nine-inning contest. Both teams stranded 10 runners on the bases.

The contest was a battle of two teams in the latest edition of the Atlantic Region rankings that were released during the game. Frostburg State is fifth in the Atlantic, while Shippensburg is eighth.

Junior
Gio Calamia was the only Raider with a multi-hit game. Calamia finished 3-for-5 at the plate, crushing his third home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Senior
Andrew Chronister was 1-for-2 at the plate, knocking in the only other RBI for the Raiders with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Sophomore
J.T. Weaver got the start on the mound, going six innings on the afternoon. Weaver was tagged for three runs in the first inning, but only allowed two hits over the next five innings. Weaver finished with three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

A walk and a single gave the Bobcats two baserunners in the first inning. A two-out, three run blast by Ryan Bouma gave FSU a quick 3-0 cushion.

Frostburg pitcher Jack Ray left the bases loaded in the third inning, then threw two clean innings until Calamia's no-doubter to lead off the sixth. The Raiders got two more runners on base in the inning but were stranded

The Bobcats answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage. Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases with nobody out. A single through the left side by Randy Steen scored both runs, but junior
Jaxon Dalena came on in relief to collect three outs and strand two runners.

The Raiders loaded the bases again to start the bottom of the eighth inning. With no outs, Chronister drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield. FSU made two good defensive plays in the next two at-bats to get out of the inning.

Bouma's fourth RBI of the day for the Bobcats made it a 6-2 game in the top of the ninth. Calamia earned his third hit of the day with a rope into right field, but SU could not otherwise rally.

Shippensburg returns to action on Wednesday, May 8 for the opening-round elimination game of the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Slippery Rock's Jack Critchfield Park.
