RECAP: Softball has 25-hit day but settles for split at Millersville

SU wins opener, 7-1, loses Game 2, 5-3

The Shippensburg University softball team cranked out 25 hits in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Millersville on Saturday but also stranded 19 runners on base and had to settle for a split with the Marauders on their senior day at Seaber Stadium. SU won the opener, 7-1, but dropped the nightcap, 5-3.

Shippensburg (30-12, 17-9 PSAC East) got the 16th complete game of the season from junior Alicia Ball, who scattered five hits and a walk in the Game 1 win while striking out two. Ball's 16 complete games this season are seven more than the Raiders had all of last season and are the most in a single season by an SU pitcher since Taryn Wilson had 16 in 2019.

Millersville (22-21, 13-13) scored all five of its Game 2 runs in the first three innings of the nightcap and held off the Raiders down the stretch for the split. The big blow was a two-run homer by Gabby D'Ottavio in the third inning. Alex Schaefer, who lost the opener, got the final six outs of Game 2 for a save.

Sophomore Caitlyn Martell was 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Reagan Bauman returned to the lineup and was 3-for-7 with a sacrifice fly.

Senior Taylor Myers had four hits and two RBI atop the leadoff spot. Myers moved into third place in school history for career hits (269 in 186 career games).

Sophomore Emilee Sullivan, senior Morgan Lindsay and freshman Brie Wilmot all had three hits and an RBI. Freshman Sarah Sabocsik had a double, a triple and three runs scored.

Sophomore Kaira Zamadics worked four innings in relief in Game 2, scattering a run on six hits, walking two and striking out two.

Shippensburg remains on the road Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at West Chester.
