SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team scored a run in the first inning of both games of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader against Lock Haven on Friday and rode strong starts from junior
Jaxon Dalena and graduate
Ryan Gleason to win 4-1 and 3-0 over the Bald Eagles on a terrifically windy day at Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (19-15, 12-10 PSAC East) and Lock Haven (7-27, 4-18) combined for 25 hits in the doubleheader – all singles. The Raiders had 12, and the Bald Eagles had 13. The only near extra-base hit of the day came in Game 1, LHU catcher Jake Ambrosio hit an RBI-single into the gap that junior
Bryce Herb fielded and gunned down Ambrosio at second for an outfield assist.
Â
SU was aggressive on the basepaths, stealing six bases on the day. The Raiders manufactured their runs well – delivering four sacrifice bunts, hitting two sacrifice flies, walking six times and being hit by three hit-by-pitches. Of the seven Raider runs on the day, three came via sacrifices and another scored on a groundout.
Â
Dalena improved to 3-2 on the season with an efficient 90-pitch effort in Game 1, scattering seven singles and a walk over six innings while striking out six. The lone run against him was unearned. Senior
Ethan Miller struck out the side in the opener for his third save of the season.
Â
Gleason improved to 3-2 as well, throwing 93 pitches in six innings in Game 2. With the bases loaded and one out in the third, Gleason recorded back-to-back strikeouts – two of his three punchouts on the day – to strand three Bald Eagles. In the sixth, LHU again loaded the bases with one out as the skies opened up. What was already a very windy day led to a three-minute delay in the inning as a rain squall and a sustained gale-force gust halted the proceedings. Soon after returning, Gleason induced a line-out double play to escape trouble.
Â
Freshman
Conner Barto pitched a scoreless seventh, retiring the side on 11 pitches for his second save. Barto struck out one.
Â
Five Raiders had two hits on the day. Junior
Gio Calamia reached base four times, going 2-for-5 with two walks, and stole three bases. Fellow junior
Carter Hinds had two hits, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Senior
Austin Baal had two hits, two walks and two RBI.
Â
Shippensburg and Lock Haven were the only two PSAC teams to battle through the weather on Friday and play their scheduled doubleheader.
Â
The two teams are scheduled to complete the weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Stern Athletic Complex.
