RECAP: Softball picks up key regional sweep of Frostburg State, 9-5, 4-0

Myers goes 7-for-8 atop the Raider order with four RBI

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team used a strong start Wednesday to key its sweep of regional foe Frostburg State, as the Raiders defeated the Bobcats by scores of 9-5 and 4-0 on an unseasonably warm afternoon at Robb Field.

Shippensburg (25-9) scored at least run in each of the first six innings of its Game 1 victory while using a three-run third inning in Game 2 to establish momentum. The Raiders outhit the visitors 25-12 on the day, slugging six doubles and a home run.

Frostburg State (20-13) countered single runs in the first two innings of Game 1 with a two-run double by Jamie Roberts – the Mountain East Conference (MEC) co-leader in home runs and RBIs entering the day – to make it 2-2. It was the only hit of the day for Roberts, however, who served as the starting pitcher in Game 1 but yielded nine runs over 4.1 innings of work.

Senior Taylor Myers was nearly perfect atop the Raider lineup, going 7-for-8 on the day with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. She was 4-for-4 with four RBI in the opener and 3-for-4 with a steal in the nightcap.

Myers is now in sole possession of second place on SU's all-time list for career runs (169) and now ranks fourth in school history for career hits (255).

After a 15-pitch at-bat to start off the day, senior catcher Morgan Lindsay crushed the first pitch of her second at-bat over the right-center field fence for her team-leading ninth home run of the season, and then ripped the first pitch of her third at-bat into left field for an RBI-double.

Sophomore Caitlyn Martell was 4-for-8 with four RBI and a pair of doubles. Freshman Emily Lafferty was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Game 1.

Sophomore Lindsey Haser got the start at designated player in both games and finished the day with three hits and two runs scored. Haser hit the ball hard all three times in the opener, including a pair of doubles to about the exact same spot in the right-center field gap – one off the wall and the other off the warning track.

Senior Alyssa Nehlen was 2-for-4, scored two runs, and was hit twice. Nehlen has now been hit by 42 pitches in her career – including 12 times this season.

Freshman Madalyn Dyer shook off a rough start yesterday with five shutout innings of work in Game 2 to improve to 7-2 on the season. Dyer negotiated out of trouble in the opening inning, stranding a leadoff double, and finished the day scattering three hits and two walks while striking out three. Junior Katelyn Minney entered the game with two runners on in the seventh and got the final three outs to record her third save of the season.

Junior Alicia Ball pitched a complete game in the opener. Ball upped her record to 14-2, allowing five runs on seven hits in seven innings. She walked four, struck out nine, and hit two batters.

Shippensburg is scheduled to host Bloomsburg at 2 p.m. Friday, weather permitting.
