RECAP: Baseball settles for weekend split, drops both games of doubleheader at Shepherd

Baal, Wyatt go deep for Raiders in Game 1

The Shippensburg University baseball team dropped both halves of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Shepherd on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Fairfax Field, 13-4 and 4-1.

Shippensburg (16-11, 10-6 PSAC) and Shepherd (10-14, 5-7) combined for six home runs in a Game 1 slugfest, while the Raiders managed just one run on four hits in the nightcap.

Senior Austin Baal and graduate Morgan Wyatt hit solo shots for the Raiders in the opener. Shepherd countered with four longballs, which accounted for six of its 13 runs.

Junior Gio Calamia led the Raiders with three hits in the doubleheader, while senior Andrew Chronister contributed two RBI.

Senior Gabe Stotler was a hard-luck loser in Game 2. The right-hander scattered four hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings. He was charged with four earned runs.

Game 1: Shepherd 13, Shippensburg 4

The Rams put up crooked numbers in three different frames, scoring three in the first inning, four in the fourth, and six runs in the sixth.

Shepherd led off the bottom of the first with a single, setting up a two-run homer by Mike Guzzardo. Two batters later, Sam Daggers sent another big fly over the left field fence to give the Rams a 3-0 first-inning edge.

Baal led off the top of the second with his fifth home run of the season, but the Raiders would not score again until the sixth.

Shepherd got back to work in the fourth inning, adding on to take a 7-1 lead. A single started the rally, and Idris Carter and Conner Dewees hit back-to-back home runs in the next two at-bats. A double later in the inning would bring home another run.

Wyatt hit his second home run of the season to make it a 7-2 ballgame in the sixth.

Shepherd led off the home half of the sixth with a single before five straight walks gave the Rams three more runs. A single brought in two more runs and a sacrifice fly gave the Rams a 13-2 lead.

Chronister knocked in two more runs in the top of the seventh, singling up the middle with the bases loaded.

Game Two:

Shepherd jumped out to a 4-0 advantage behind a Dewees solo shot, the Rams' fifth of the twinbill, and a two-run single off the bat of Aidan Greeney.

Ram pitchers Brayden Stottlemeyer (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R) and Chris Chaney (5 IP, 3 H, 1 R) combined for just one run allowed over the course of seven innings. Chaney was credited with the win.

Raider sophomore Mike Heckman doubled to start the top of the sixth and crossed home plate on an RBI groundout from junior Bryce Herb for the Raiders' only run.

SU returns to Fairchild Field for a nine-inning nonconference clash on Tuesday against Goldey-Beacom beginning at 3 p.m.
