The Shippensburg University men's outdoor track & field team had a very productive day and night at the York College Twilight Meet held Wednesday.
There were many notable performances, but perhaps none more noteworthy than that of
Kenny Rhyne, who equaled the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the high jump by clearing the bar at a victorious height of 6 feet, 8 ¼ inches (2.04 meters). It marks a new lifetime best for Rhyne, whose previous PR was 6 feet, 7 ¾ inches (2.03 meters). Rhyne is now tied for eighth all-time in school history for the outdoor high jump.
Wednesday night's meet provided another opportunity for early-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships qualifiers, and the distance squad came through with a splendid showing under the lights.
In the 1,500 meters, SU finished in first through fourth place.
Ian Sherlock won with a time of 3:55.23, followed by
Drew Dailey at 3:58.51,
Ryan Wolfe at 4:00.66 and
Garrett Quinan at his side at 4:00.72.
The Raiders also had five of the Top 5 finishers in the 5K.
Tommy Crum Jr. won with a time of 14:55.47, while
Aiden Gonder was second in 15:04.27,
Hayden Hunt ran third in 15:06.88,
Brennan Wellock took fifth in 15:07.32, and
Nathan Harding crossed the line seventh in 15:10.84.
All nine of the distance efforts were new PSAC qualifiers.
Jackson Gutekunst led the Raiders in the 800 meters and narrowly missed the PSAC standard, finishing fourth in 1:57.21.
Chase Hensinger was second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.74 seconds.
SU won both the 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relays. In the 4x4, Dailey, Hensinger,
Robert Lissner and
Ryan Scicchitano were listed with a time of 3:23.93. In the 4x8, Gutekunst, Quinan, Sherlock and Wolfe were listed with a time of 7:58.52.
First-year throwers
Donovan Kitchen and
Gian Greggo notched conference cuts in both the discus and the shot. Kitchen won the discus on a throw of 153 feet and was fifth in the shot with a put of 48 feet, 9 ½ inches. Greggo was third in the discus with a throw of 145 feet, 2 inches and fourth in the shot with a put of 50 feet, 8 inches.
Lissner cleared 13 feet, 11 ¼ inches to win the pole vault. After successfully clearing that height on his first attempt, Lissner passed twice until the bar got to 15 feet, but he was unable to have success at that height.
Shippensburg is back in action Saturday at Lafayette.
