RECAP: Softball splits road doubleheader at Bloomsburg

SU wins Game 1, 6-1, but drops Game 2, 9-1 in five innings

The Shippensburg University softball team split its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division road doubleheader of the week on Friday, taking Game 1 at Bloomsburg, 6-1, before dropping Game 2, 9-1 in five innings, at Jan Hutchinson Field.

Shippensburg (13-5, 2-2 PSAC East) dominated Game 1, while Bloomsburg (12-7, 1-1) dominated Game 2.

SU returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday at No. 13 East Stroudsburg. The Warriors will be hosting ALS Awareness Day at Creekview Park.

Game 1: Shippensburg 6, Bloomsburg 1

Entering Friday, Bloomsburg pitching ace Callie Sowers had been masterful, allowing just four earned runs and 33 total hits over the course of 65 innings this season.

The Raiders were able to record six earned runs and 11 hits off Sowers on Friday, including six extra-base hits. Sowers had only allowed seven extra-base hits all season prior to facing SU.

In the third, senior Morgan Lindsay opened the scoring with a monstrous home run to left field.

In the fifth, senior Taylor Myers led off with a triple and was promptly singled home by sophomore Caitlyn Martell.

In the seventh, senior Alyssa Nehlen led off with a single and Myers then doubled. With one out, Lindsay was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Sarah Sabocsik came up and delivered an RBI-single to make it 3-0.

Sophomore Emilee Sullivan promptly clinched it for the Raiders with a bases-clearing double to left-center field that made it 6-0 in favor of Shippensburg.

Junior Alicia Ball outdueled Sowers to improve to 7-1. Ball had a no-hitter going with two outs in the fifth inning until the Huskies loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. Ball escaped the jam with a fielder's choice, and her only blemish was a seventh-inning solo home run. She scattered four hits and three walks and struck out nine.

Myers finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Junior Katelyn Minney was 2-for-3 with a sun-aided double. Senior Maelynn Leber  also doubled in the contest.

Game 2: Bloomsburg 9, Shippensburg 1 (5 innings)

Bloomsburg struck for three runs in the first and four in the second to take a 7-0 lead that set the tone for the nightcap. SU's only run came on an RBI-single in the third inning by Lindsay.

The Raiders used sophomore Kaira Zamadics, freshman Maddy Borowski and freshman Madalyn Dyer in the circle. Dyer struck out four in 2.1 innings.

Kelly Eberly got the win for the Huskies, allowing a run on four hits over five innings. Eberly walked two and struck out one.
