RECAP: Softball rebounds Sunday with wins over Catawba, Lees-McRae

SU wins 8-4 in eight innings over host Indians for first win of the year

The Shippensburg University softball team got back on track Sunday with a pair of victories over teams that had gotten the best of them the day before – defeating host Catawba 8-4 in eight innings and Lees-McRae by a 10-3 score.

Shippensburg (2-2) pounded out 18 runs and 23 hits and committed just one error after tallying just four runs, 12 hits and seven errors in two games yesterday.

The Top 3 of the Raider lineup -- senior Taylor Myers, sophomore Caitlin Martell and senior Morgan Lindsay, had 14 of SU's 23 hits on the day – all three players had multiple hits in both games.

Myers was 6-for-8 with two walks and four runs scored. Martell was 4-for-7 with a two-run homer, three walks and four runs scored. Lindsay was the premiere slugger – homering in both games and finishing the two games 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits, eight RBIs and two walks.

Shippensburg will next be in action Friday with its home opener, hosting Goldey-Beacom for a doubleheader at noon Friday at Claudia Robb Field.

Game 1: Shippensburg 8, Catawba 4 (eight innings)

SU used a four-run eighth inning to complete a comeback victory over Catawba (6-5) for its first win. of the season. The Raiders rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the ballgame at 4-4 before a three-run blast by Lindsay tilted the score.

Freshman Maddy Borowski and junior Katelyn Minney pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in relief for the Raiders. Borowski tossed 3.2 innings and Minney picked up the win with a 1-2-3 eighth inning to shut the door in extra innings.

The game began with a leadoff walk to Myers that set up a two-run shot from Martell. Lindsay then doubled, which chased Catawba's starting pitcher after three batters. The reliever stranded Lindsay to get out of the inning.

Catawba drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second to get a run back before taking the lead back with a three-run third inning. A single and a double set up a three-run homer from Molly Strider to put the Indians ahead 4-2.

Borowski entered the circle to replace sophomore Kaira Zamadics for the final two outs of the third inning. Zamadics tossed 2.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

The Raiders stranded three runners in the top of the fourth but took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the sixth. Myers started the rally with a single to left-center field. Martell walked and Lindsay was hit with a pitch to load the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by sophomore Lindsey Haser scored Myers and moved Martell to third. Martell then raced home to tie the game on a wild pitch.

Borowski retired all three batters in the sixth and stranded two runners in the seventh as Catawba threatened to walk off.

Freshman Emily Lafferty led off the eighth with a bunt single. Myers continued her 4-for-4 day with a single to set up Lindsay's blast to left field. The Raiders got a fourth run from a pinch-hit RBI double by junior Aryanna Briddell that scored freshman Sarah Sabocsik.

Minney struck out the first batter of the bottom of the eighth before two groundouts to freshman first base Brie Wilmot closed out the ballgame.

Myers scored three runs in her perfect day at the plate. Martell and Lindsay combined for five RBI with each of their home runs.

Game 2: Shippensburg 10, Lees-McRae 3

The "nightcap" victory over the Bobcats featured many standout performances, but the breakout performance was delivered by Wilmot, who went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, a double and two runs scored.

SU once again hit a two-run home run in the first inning, this time by Lindsay after a one-out single by Martell. Lindsay drew a bases-loaded walk in the second, and in a 3-3 game in the third, Wilmot hit her first collegiate home run to kickstart seven unanswered runs by the Raiders.

SU scored two in the fourth, as Briddell and Sabocsik hit sacrifice flies. The final three runs came in the seventh – one on an error on a stolen base by senior Alyssa Nehlen and two more on a single by Lindsay.

The beneficiary of the offensive eruption was junior Alicia Ball, who spun a complete game from the circle. After a difficult first time through the order, Ball hit her stride in the middle innings – striking out five batters spanning the fourth and fifth inning.

Overall, Ball allowed three runs (two earned) and yielded six hits. She walked six but struck out 10 – matching her career high.
