SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team defeated East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup, 55-45, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Heiges Field House.
Graduate
Treasure George recorded her 1,000th career point with a momentum-shifting three midway through the second quarter. George led the Raiders with 16 points in the contest, going 7-of-10 from the foul line. George also recorded four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Junior
Abbie Miller scored 15 points for the Raiders on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. Miller was 5-of-6 from the line with eight rebounds and was a defensive force with a career-high four steals and two blocks.
The freshmen trio of
Mia Johnson,
Alexis Buie, and
Bella Chimienti combined for 21 points. Johnson scored eight points with six rebounds, Buie had seven points with three rebounds, and Chimienti had six points and six rebounds.
Shippensburg (5-20, 3-15 PSAC) shot 30 percent from the field in the game, but converted 20-of-26 free throws in the game. East Stroudsburg (7-16, 5-13) were held to a paltry 25 percent from the field and were held to 1-of-13 from behind the arc.
Defensively, the Raiders forced 22 turnovers; their second highest total in a game this year. SU used 13 offensive rebounds to get 16 second-chance points. The Raiders won the rebound battle 41-37 and outscored the Warriors in the paint 30-18.
It was a great defensive first half for Shippensburg. The Raiders held the Warriors scoreless for nearly eight minutes to start the ballgame, taking a 12-0 advantage over that span with four points from both George and Miller.
Shippensburg led by seven with three minutes remaining in the second quarter, when George knocked down a three for her 1,000th career point – becoming the 26th player in program history to reach that milestone. A basket by Miller on the next possession restored the Raiders 12-point lead at 22-10
The Raiders carried a 25-15 lead at the half, holding the Warriors to 23 percent shooting with 14 first half turnovers.
Both teams traded runs throughout the third frame. Two runs of 6-0 by the Warriors cut Raiders lead to just four points at 36-32. Shippensburg responded with the last five points in the final 90 seconds of the quarter to head to the fourth with a 41-32 edge.
Baskets by George and Miller and Buie contributed to a 5-0 run to open the final quarter. Shippensburg held its lead for the remainder of the game, knocking down 3-of-4 free throws to close out the game.
East Stroudsburg's Gwenn Sabato and Emily Chmiel finished in double figures. Both players went for 10 points and six rebounds in the game.
SU travels to West Chester on Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Hollinger Field House.
