The Shippensburg University men's swimming team performed at a high level Saturday for a solid day of competition at the Gettysburg Invitational with a morning and an evening timed finals session at Bullet Natatorium.
A total of 10 individual and three relay events were held within the two sessions. The team opened with the 200-yard medley relay, with the group of sophomore
Mason Koeth, senior
Nathan VanNatter, freshman
Josh Einolf, and sophomore
Robbie Ferlick taking runner-up with a time of 1:33.60.
The Raiders picked up two scoring performances in the 100-yard butterfly: Koeth and senior
David Johnson. Koeth swam 51.86 seconds to take 10th overall, and Johnson had a swim of 52.41 seconds to place 12th. Both satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
The 200-yard freestyle was highlighted by Ferlick, who swam 1:46.09 to take sixth overall in the event.
The 100-yard breaststroke had five Raiders score and two earn PSAC standards. Johnson nearly dipped under a minute, swimming 1:00.08 to take fourth overall, while Einolf swam 1:01.26 to take 11th place.
Freshman
Alex Kissinger was the lone Raider in the 100-yard backstroke, which was the final individual race of the morning session, swimming the race in 55.15 seconds to take 10th place and earn the PSAC standard.
To begin the evening session, Kissinger was also the only representative in the 200-yard backstroke, dipping under two minutes with his time of 1:59.38 to take eighth place.
Three Raiders scored in the 100-yard freestyle: Koeth, sophomore
Connor Ludwig, and Johnson. Koeth took fifth with a 47.09 second swim, Ludwig eighth in 47.43, and Johnson finished 14th with his time of 48.03 seconds.
Ferlick and senior
Zaidian Van Orden both scored in the 200-yard breaststroke, taking ninth and 10th place respectively. Ferlick swam 2:22.72 while Van Orden swam 2:30.54.
The final individual event of the session and weekend, the 200-yard butterfly, saw two Raiders score and one earn the PSAC standard. Sophomore
Luke Roettger held on at the end of the race to narrowly edge the PSAC cut (2:03.62) by exactly one tenth of a second, swimming 2:03.52 and placing 10th. Einolf also competed, swimming 2:04.63 and taking 12th overall.
The final race of the weekend, the 400-yard freestyle relay, saw the Raiders repeat as the victors of the race. The team of Koeth, Ferlick, Ludwig and senior
Nathan VanNatter all split under 47 seconds to swim a 3:06.04, which was the fastest non-exhibition time.
Johnson, junior
Kevin Noldy, Kissinger, and sophomore
Cooper Mercer (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) raced to finish fifth in the event, touching the wall at 3:13.93.
On the weekend, the Raiders amassed 19 total PSAC standards and 32 scoring performances through the two days of competition. SU finished fourth in the team standings with 429 points.
Having completed its meet schedule for the fall semester, the Raiders will be back in action in a dual meet when they travel to Edinboro on Jan. 10.
