The Shippensburg University wrestling team gave its first glimpse of some of its offseason improvements with a strong start to its season Saturday at the Tonee Ellis Memorial Invitational hosted by Alvernia College.
 
Sophomore Diesel Koser led a group of four Raider wrestlers that clinched top-four places in their respective weight classes by taking the 285-pound title Saturday. Junior Trey Shoemaker placed third at 174 pounds, while freshman Anthony DeAngelo and junior Cole Lang finished fourth at 174 and 184, respectively.
 
Koser, wrestling up in weight from his normal 197 pounds, dominated the competition at heavyweight, picking up bonus points in each of his four victories. After pinning his first two opponents, he majored SU teammate Connor Livingston in the semifinals, 8-0, and Western New England wrestler Spencer Dickson in the finals, 13-2.
 
Shoemaker, making his debut at 174 after wrestling at 197 pounds all of last season, earned three pins on his way to the third-place match, where he picked up a forfeit win over DeAngelo.
 
DeAngelo impressed with four wins in his Raider debut, with both of his losses coming at the hands of his more experienced SU teammate.
 
Lang won four consecutive matches during wrestlebacks to reach the third place match at 184 pounds.
 
Junior Owen Koch won three matches in the 184-pound bracket.
 
Senior Connor Livingston and sophomore AJ Stayton won two matches apiece; while junior Anthony Lavish, Calvin Lederer and Noah Gilgore also recorded wins.
 
Next up, the Raiders kickoff their dual meet schedule Wednesday at Elizabethtown starting at 6 p.m.
