RECAP: Dietrich’s dazzling goal helps Women’s Soccer take down Lock Haven, 1-0

Dietrich scores her second goal of season

A sensational steal and score by senior Suzy Dietrich helped the Shippensburg University women's soccer team take down Lock Haven on Wednesday afternoon, 1-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Shippensburg (4-7-2, 4-5-2 PSAC East) scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute. After stealing the ball in the offensive zone, Dietrich found herself open on the break by taking advantage of a slip up by a Bald Eagle defender. With two defenders closing in and goalie Megan Miller moving up to make a stop, Dietrich crossed over to the right, using a bit of nifty dribbling to evade the defense for an easy goal in the bottom center of the net.

Lock Haven (2-8-3, 2-8-1) had multiple opportunities to even the game, recording six shots on goals, but could not make it past sophomore Kirstin Brown, who netted five saves on the match. Brown recorded her second collegiate shutout.

SU almost had a second goal, as Lannah Werynski appeared to have scored off a corner kick, but the tally was disallowed after interference was called on a Raider in the box.

Statistically, it was a fairly even match. SU had a slight advantage in shots on goal (seven to six) and corners (seven to four). Both teams had six saves on the day.

Freshman Cailin Spelman made a team save for the Raiders in the 11th minute, helping to clear a ball off the line after a dangerous LHU corner kick.

Shippensburg will host Mansfield at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for Senior Day at David See Field. Six players will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies.
