SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped a tough loss to Shepherd, 2–1, on Wednesday evening at David See Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.
Shippensburg (3–3–1, 1–3 PSAC East) took a 1–0 lead through sophomore
Luke Kramer just before the half, but two second-half goals by the Rams completed Shepherd's turnaround for the comeback win and all three points.
It was a fast start to the game as both sides got into the final third in the first five minutes. A scramble in the Raiders box saw an opportunity for Asong Nkemanjong go high over the net. Moments later, junior
Ashton Davies connected with sophomore
Darius Bamfo who could only get a touch to redirect the ball on goal.
Neither team saw any more shots on goal in the half until Kramer's 44th minute breakthrough. Sophomore
Ethan Paulukow drove down the wing, gliding past his defender. His delivery into the box caused a mess in front of goal that Kramer cleaned up as he redirected his header backwards to tuck it in the back of the net.
Shepherd (2–5–1, 1–3–1 PSAC East) got off to a flying start in the second half, scoring just four minutes in. Owen Wood was sent through on goal, lobbing a soft shot over junior
Cody Willoughby. Willoughby threw his hand out to make a stunning save, but Ryan Fisher played clean up at the far post to equalize at 1–1.
The Ram's big moment came in the 73rd minute through Josue Guzman. Guzman found a pocket of space outside the box, and the midfielder took a touch to his left before drilling his effort into the upper left corner for the 2–1 advantage.
Looking for an equalizer late in the match, Kramer nearly found his second goal. A corner by junior
Victor Vottero forced a big hand by the keeper, whose punch out only got to Kramer sitting at the top of the box. Kramer's effort pushed just wide of the net, and Shepherd was able to run out time until the final whistle.
Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday with another home match as East Stroudsburg comes to town for a PSAC East matchup with kickoff at 4 p.m.
