PUEBLO, Col. – Pat Maloney achieved All-America Second Team honors in the discus on Friday, placing ninth in competition at the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Colorado State University Pueblo.
Â
Maloney unleashed a throw of 173 feet, 11 inches (53.00 meters) on his third and final throw of prelims to vault himself from 13th place at the time into fifth place and a spot in the finals. He sat in seventh place entering the final round of throws but was surpassed by two Grand Valley State throwers who improved on their final attempts, resulting in ninth place and a Top 10 finish in his NCAA Championships debut.
Â
It culminates a spectacular throwing career for Maloney, a three-time All-PSAC performer in the discus and two-time conference champion. This outdoor season, Maloney was an All-PSAC (second place) finisher in the discus who also scored at the conference meet in the shot and the hammer. He was also the only Raider to earn three All-Region classifications, as he was honored for each of his three different throwing events (shot, discus, hammer).
Â
His discus PR remains 179 feet, 11 inches (54.83 meters), and ranks him second in school history for the event behind All-American SU record holder Bryan Pearson.
Â
Maloney's competition wraps up the 2022-23 athletic calendar for SU men's sports.
