RECAP: Softball Sweeps Past Holy Family

Myers goes 5-for-8, Zamadics with a career-high six strikeouts


SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.--- The Shippensburg University softball team started a long four doubleheader week with a sweep over Holy Family on Monday afternoon at Robb Field. The Raiders won Game 1, 6-3, and had to rally back in Game 2, 3-1.
 
Shippensburg (24-15) had 16 hits and no errors. Junior Taylor Myers was 5-for-8 and added three runs. Myers leads the team in multi-hit games with 19.
 
Freshman Caitlyn Martell had three hits, including a two-run home run in Game 1, as well as drawing two walks. Reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Athlete of the Week, graduate Hannah Marsteller, also had three hits, and added the tying RBI-single in Game 2. She also drew one walk.
 
Junior Alyssa Nehlen had a hit, drew a walk and was hit by pitch. Fellow junior Morgan Lindsay added three RBIs.
 
Junior Maelynn Leber started in Game 1 and threw a complete game. Leber allowed three runs and had two strikeouts. Senior Hanna Phillips started in Game 2 and threw 2.1 innings and had three strikeouts. Designated player and then pitcher, freshman Kaira Zamadics finished up Game 2 and the win, throwing 4.2 innings and had a career-high six strikeouts.
 
Shippensburg will be back at Robb Field to face Mansfield for a PSAC matchup at 2 p.m.
 
Game 1: Shippensburg 6, Holy Family 3
 
Shippensburg started strong in the first inning with a single by Myers to left field and back-to-back walks drawn by Martell and Marsteller to load the bases. Lindsay brought Myers home with a sacrifice fly to center field to take a 1-0 lead. Nehlen reached base on a hit by pitch to load the bases again. Minney brought another run home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
The Raiders extended their lead with back-to-back singles by Martell and Marsteller in the bottom of the third. Martell scored on a Holy Family (16-28) error, while Lindsay scored on an RBI single by Zamadics.
 
The Tigers fought back in the top of the fourth with a solo home run by Kylee Jones. SU answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run bomb by Martell to left field.
 
Leber faced the minimum in each of her first three innings pitched, only allowing one hit.
 
Game 2: Shippensburg 3, Holy Family 1
 
Holy Family struck first in the top of the third with an RBI single to left center. The Raiders struggled to hit until the bottom of the fifth with a double by freshman Rilee Ehrlacher down the left field line, followed by a bunt single by Myers. Marsteller brouhgt home Ehrlacher with a single to center field to tie the game 1-1. Lindsay then hit the go-ahead single to right field to bring Myers home and give SU the lead. Marsteller then scored on a wild pitch during sophomore Katelyn Minney at-bat.
 
Zamadics's six strikeouts is a career high, surpassing her previous career high of five against Fairmont State. Zamadics allowed only two hits and no runs.
