RECAP: Baseball victorious in slugfest against Pitt-Johnstown, 17-7

Byler, Baal and Wyatt combine for 11 RBIs

The Shippensburg University baseball team recorded at least one run from each batter in a non-conference matchup against Pitt–Johnstown on Tuesday afternoon, 17-7, at Point Stadium.

Shippensburg (20-21) had two Raiders post four hits for the second time this season as graduate Justin Byler and sophomore Gio Calamia each went 4-5 on the day.

Pitt-Johnstown (13-24) notched 13 base hits, highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs from Evan Beach.

The Raiders trailed 1-0 heading into the third before rattling off three straight runs from sophomore Carter Arbuthnot, freshman Tony Falvo and Calamia.

A four-run fifth inning from the Mountain Cats put the Raiders behind yet again, though a lead-off triple from Byler in the sixth began the comeback for SU. Junior Austin Baal blasted his PSAC-leading eleventh home run over the left-center field wall to tie the game, 5-5.

As the side progressed, Shippensburg scored an additional six runs on four hits and two errors from UPJ.

Pitt-Johnstown earned two back in the seventh with Beach's second homer of the day.

The Raiders pulled away even further in the eighth as a double from Byler brought sophomore Carter Hinds home for the twelfth run of the day.

Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for junior Morgan Wyatt who launched his first career grand slam well over 400 feet to centerfield to put the game out of reach.

Arbuthnot posted his third run of the day of a single from Calamia to bring the Raiders final run total to 17.

Redshirt-sophomore Brock Piper got the start for Shippensburg, striking out four and walking just one in 4.1 innings pitched.

Freshman Frank Muendel earned the win in his second career appearance, sending three batters down swinging and not allowing a single walk in 2.1 innings.

Calamia finished the day with a career-high four hits, with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Byler notched his fourth four-hit game of the season, falling a home run short of completing the cycle.

The Raiders picked up their first road win over the Mountain Cats since April 8, 2014.

SU returns to action at Fairchild Field on Friday for the series opener against Kutztown beginning at 2 p.m.
