SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team had its first home match of the spring season Tuesday and emerged victorious, posting a 6-1 win over East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match on a sunny and warm afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (2-7, 1-3 PSAC East) gained the early momentum with the doubles point, as the No. 1 pairing of freshman Corrine Markovich and sophomore
Brooklynn Rupert took a 6-1 victory. The duo of junior
Brighid Cantwell and sophomore
Kendall Winters won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Raiders claimed four of the five contested matches and won No. 6 singles by default. At No. 2 singles, Rupert posted a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory for her first singles win of the season.

At No. 5 singles, freshman
Avery Wissinger notched her first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in which she rallied to take the first set by winning the final three games.

Cantwell continued her excellent singles play with her fourth victory in five spring outings at No. 4 singles. Her 6-0, 6-2 victory moved her to 3-1 against Eastern Division opponents.

Winters battled to a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles, enduring to a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Markovich won four games against Elina Joronen, the reigning PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week for East Stroudsburg (0-8, 0-5).

Shippensburg is right back at it tomorrow, hosting Shepherd at 3 p.m. at Robb Sports Complex.
