The Shippensburg University women's tennis team battled in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener on Wednesday afternoon but came up short, dropping a 6-1 decision at Kutztown.

Shippensburg (1-5, 0-1 PSAC East) had two singles matches go three sets against Kutztown (3-6, 1-1). At No. 4 singles, junior
Brighid Cantwell won her second straight match by claiming a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.

At No. 3 singles, sophomore
Kendall Winters dropped the first set in a tiebreaker (6-7 (4-7)) before taking the second set, 6-3. Her opponent Jess Marks won the third, 7-5.

Freshman Corrine Markovich won seven games at No. 1 singles, falling 3-6, 4-6.
Avery Wissinger won two singles games at No. 5 singles.

Kutztown also won the doubles point by claiming all three flights.

Shippensburg is scheduled to host East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. Saturday.
