Shippensburg University graduate
Avery Shay took eighth place in the 157-pound bracket at the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, earning All-America honors Saturday at the Alliant Energy Power House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Â
It is Shay's first All-America recognition and marks the second consecutive season the Raiders have landed a wrestler on the state podium. Graduate
Tyshawn White placed third at 125 pounds at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Â
Shay did most of his heavy lifting Friday, winning three matches and advancing to the championship quarterfinals on the first day of the weekend competition.
Â
He won a tense 1-0 decision over No. 7 seed Jamar Williams of West Liberty to advance to the quarterfinals, where he lost to No. 2 seed and eventual 157-pound champion Nick Novak of Saint Cloud St. He later clinched a place on the podium with a 5-3 decision victory over Colorado School of Mines wrestler Carter Noehre during wrestlebacks.
Â
On Saturday, Shay lost to Trent Mahoney of King University in the consolation quarterfinals, then fell to No. 3 seed Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma in the seventh-place match.
Â
He concludes the 2022-23 season with an outstanding 16-5 record.

Redshirt-junior
Danny Scheib represented Shippensburg in the heavyweight bracket, and was matched up against the returning national champion, No. 6 seed Darrell Mason of Minnesota State in the opening round Friday.
Â
Scheib took Mason to overtime with the score tied at 1-1. Scheib bear-hugged his opponent for the first 20 seconds of sudden victory. Looking to score, he rotated as Mason was falling, but it was Mason that landed on top for a pin.
Â
The close, heartbreaking defeat was followed by a 4-0 loss to Jake Swirple of Minot State (N.D.) in the consolation bracket.
Â
Scheib finished with a 16-6 record in 2022-23.
Â
"It's always great and exciting to get an All-American," said Shippensburg wrestling coach
Seth Bloomquist. "We brought two and I think it would have been better to have two All-Americans, but I think they did a great job. It's so hard because everyone that's here wants to be an All-American, and they can't all be one. Avery reached his goal and Danny went toe-to-toe with the defending national champion, you can't be disappointed in that."
