SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team braved rain, snow, sleet, and hail to score a season-high 15 runs during a wild win over the No. 6 ranked West Chester Golden Rams in the series finale Friday at Fairchild Field, 15-10.
Â
Shippensburg (13-7, 1-2 PSAC) twice rallied for five or more runs, erasing a three-run deficit with a six spot in the bottom of the fifth, then breaking a 10-10 tie with a five-run outburst in the eighth to win it.
Â
The Raiders pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon. Sophomore centerfield
Gio Calamia was at the center of both big rallies, going 3-for-5 on the day with five RBIs.
Â
West Chester (10-4, 2-1 PSAC) pitching aided the Ship rallies by issuing eleven walks after being staked to an early 7-3 lead. Designated hitter John DeMucci went 3-for-4 for the Golden Rams with two runs scored and two driven in.
Â
Shippensburg began to chip away at the 7-3 deficit in the bottom of the fourth, with junior
Joe Barbera scoring on a wild pitch to make it a three-run game.
Â
The first four SU hitters reached to start the fifth, including three walks, with sophomore
Jaxon Dalena drawing a free pass with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Barbera added another bases loaded walk later in the frame to trim the deficit to one, before Calamia lofted a bloop single to center that plated the tying and go-ahead runs, 8-7.
Â
A grounder off the bat of senior
Andrew Chronister resulted in a costly two-run error that capped the Raiders' six-run fifth.
Â
Shippensburg pitchers had their own struggles with command in the wet weather during the top of the seventh, as the Golden Rams countered with three runs to even the score. A balk, a bases loaded walk, and a bases loaded hit by pitch resulted in West Chester runs.
Â
After a quick top of the eighth from redshirt-freshman
Eric Bohenek, the Raiders broke the 10-10 tie with a five-run rally in the bottom half of the frame.
Â
Dalena came through with the biggest hit, stroking a two-run single to center to give the hosts the lead. A perfectly placed bunt single from Barbera drove in an additional run, and Calamia broke the game open with a sharply hit single to right center that plated two more.
Â
Junior
Austen LaBarre struck out two during a 1-2-3 ninth inning to wrap the victory for Bohenek, who pitched two scoreless in relief of starting pitcher graduate
Noah Nabholz (2.2 IP) and junior
Jackson LoBianco (3.1 IP).
Â
Graduate
Justin Byler tallied three hits, giving him seven total in the three-game set.
Â
Dalena (1-for-3) finished with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Â
Up next, the Raiders return to Fairchild Field Tuesday for a nine-inning contest against the Wilmington (De.) Wildcats. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
