Gallery: (2-4-2023) Women's Basketball at East Stroudsburg
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team held off East Stroudsburg on Saturday, 76-67, to complete a season sweep of the Warriors in winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Shippensburg (18-3, 13-2 PSAC) never trailed, as it opened the contest on an 8-0 run and shot 46 percent in the first quarter. The Raiders brought their lead up to 10 points heading into the half.
SU out-rebounded East Stroudsburg (12-10, 8-8) by 14, 46-32, and scored 38 points in the paint. The Raiders limited ESU to 27-percent shooting in the first quarter and, for the game, to 24-percent shooting (5-of-21) from three-point range.
SU held Ryan Weise, the nation's leader in three-pointers made per game (3.45), to just one three-pointer, making it just the third game this season she finished with zero or one three-pointer in a game. The Raiders also held Weise to just one three-pointer in their first matchup back on Jan. 4.
Senior
Ariel Jones surpassed the D3 free-throws made record holder from FDU- Florham, Simone Edwards (789), to become second all-time in the NCAA (all divisions) behind former University of Washington and current Las Vegas Aces standout Kelsey Plum (912).
Jones led all scorers in the contest with 35 points, making it the fifth time this season (28th game of her career) scoring 30 or more points. It was her 70th career game scoring 20 or more points. Jones was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe and also added eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Sophomore
Abbie Miller recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Miller tied her career high in points and was rebound shy of her career high. She was 4-of-6 from the floor, including a three-pointer, and added three assists.
Graduate
Lauren Pettis added 10 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field. She brought down six rebounds and had two blocks.
Graduate
Erin Gibbons added nine points and went a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. She also added six rebounds and two steals. Junior
Treasure George contributed five points and six rebounds.
ESU was led by Shyla Sanford who had 18 points, three steals and four assists. Weise, despite shooting 1-of-10 from three-point range, still recorded a double-double by finishing with 13 points and 10 assists – equaling the most by a Raider opponent this season (Jefferson's Morgan Robinson).
Shippensburg is back at Heiges Field House Monday to take on West Chester at 6 p.m. The Raiders defeated the Golden Rams earlier this season 83-70.
