SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team clinched a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division title Saturday afternoon with a convincing 67-46 win over Lock Haven in a matchup from Heiges Field House as the Raiders celebrated Senior Day.
Shippensburg's (23-5, 18-4 PSAC) defense was efficient again, as the Raiders held Lock Haven (11-16, 9-13) to only 23 points in total combined over the second, third and fourth quarter and keeping them to single digits each quarter. Senior
Ariel Jones led the team with 25 points and broke the school record for single-season points that she held previously since setting in her sophomore year with 690 points. Jones' 706 points this season has her fourth all time in PSAC single-season points and she is the fourth player to have 700 or more points in a single season. She is the only player in conference history to have 600 or more points in all four of her seasons.
Jones also tied her career high in rebounds with 13 and recorded her fourth double-double this season. She added two assists and a steal and was 4-of-5 from the line.
Sophomore
Abbie Miller was the other Raider in double figures with 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. She also had one block.
Graduate
Lauren Pettis was 4-of-5 from the field and added nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Fellow graduate
Erin Gibbons had eight points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist.
Freshman
Makayla Foddrell had a career-high three assists and grabbed six rebounds and added three points.
Lock Haven outshot the Raiders in the first quarter shooting 72.7 percent from the field and was perfect from behind the arc going 4-for-4. Shippensburg went on an 11-0 run in the start of the second quarter and held Lock Haven to only nine points and 26.7 percent from the field and 0-for-3 from behind the arc. At halftime, SU led by one.
In the third quarter, the Raiders kept the momentum on their side with a 15-4 run and held the Bald Eagles to only eight points. In the fourth quarter, Shippensburg went on a 7-0 run and kept Lock Haven to only 18.8 percent from the field and to six points.
Shippensburg scored 19 points off 15 Lock Haven turnovers and 36 points in the paint, while Lock Haven had more than a third of its points come from the bench with 21 points.
Before the game started, Shippensburg celebrated its four seniors that made a long-lasting impact to the program: Gibbons, Jones, Pettis and
Mya Woodyard.
The Raiders finished the regular season with a 13-1 record at home, its best mark inside Heiges Field House since the 2016-17 season. It is the first time since 2017 that the Raiders have won on Senior Day.
SU and West Chester finished the regular season with matching 18-4 divisional records. Due to the tiebreaker, the Raiders secured the No. 2 seed in the East for the PSAC Tournament. The Raiders will have a bye in the first round and will face the winner of No. 3 Kutztown vs. No. 6 Lock Haven in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday. This is the first time in six years that the Raiders have won the PSAC East title since the 2017-18 team.
