SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team got a complete-game gem from junior
Gabe Stotler and a pair of RBI-singles from junior
Austin Baal on Saturday in a 3-1 victory over Slippery Rock on a frigid, grey afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (8-3) plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Baal and junior
Morgan Wyatt to help the Raiders establish momentum. Slippery Rock (1-1) scraped across a run in the sixth, but Baal answered in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI-single.
Â
Stotler did the rest, allowing just an unearned run on four hits in his nine innings of work. He walked just two batters, struck out five, and did not allow an extra-base hit.
Â
He also retired the side in order in five of his nine innings and retired the last eight Rock batters of the game to achieve his third career complete game.
Â
It is the first nine-inning complete game of Stotler's career. His previous single-game career high for innings in a game was 7.1 last season against Shepherd.
Â
Sophomore
Gio Calamia helped set the table from the leadoff spot, hitting two singles and scoring two of the three runs.
Â
Junior
Andrew Chronister and sophomore
Jaxon Dalena added singles, while freshman
Mike Heckman had two successful sacrifice bunts that helped move runners into scoring position.
Â
Slippery Rock got a solid pitching outing from Luke Trueman, who started in right field yesterday. Trueman went 6.2 innings, struck out six, and did not walk a batter. Robert Herr got the final four outs for The Rock. Alex Robenolt had two of SRU's four singles.
Â
Shippensburg concludes its four-game series with Slippery Rock at noon Sunday with a doubleheader at Fairchild Field.
