RECAP: Critical late surge sinks Men’s Basketball at Shepherd, 60-55

Raiders sit tied for first in the PSAC East entering regular-season finale

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team fell to Shepherd after a critical nine-point run in the final five minutes gave the Rams the lead in an important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup on Wednesday night inside Shepherd's Butcher Center, 60-55.

Shippensburg (17-10, 15-6 PSAC) struggled offensively against the conferences' fourth-ranked scoring defense, shooting 37.5% from the floor, including a 1-for-11 (9.09%) performance from beyond the arc in the second half.

Shepherd (14-13, 11-10) controlled much of the second half on both sides of the ball. The Rams outrebounded the Raiders 21-16, while shooting 40% from the floor.

Shippensburg led 30-29 at the half and maintained that led for most of the final 20 minutes. But at the four-minute mark, Shepherd began its decisive 9-0 run. Dan McClain-Corley scored nine-unanswered points to give the Rams the edge late in the game, including a steal and three-pointer to take the lead at the 3:28 mark.

McClain-Corley finished the contest with 23 points, scoring 16 points after halftime.

Shooting from beyond the arc proved to be the difference maker as Shepherd shot 8-of-18 from three-point range. Shippensburg converted just three of its eighteen three-point attempts in the contest, the lowest three-point percentage of the season for the Raiders.

Senior Carlos Carter recorded his sixth straight 20-point outing, while also pulling in 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Redshirt-sophomore Ty Crespo was key off the bench for SU, finishing the night with 11 points.

The Raiders currently sit atop the PSAC East standings tied with West Chester, who defeated Millersville on Wednesday in double overtime. Shippensburg will clinch the top seed in the division with a win over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon.

SU will take on the Bald Eagles for Senior Day inside Heiges Field House to close out the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
