NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Salem with an extra-inning victory, 2-1, at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
Â
Shippensburg (4-2) claimed victory after another stellar performance from the pitching staff. The trio of juniors
Ethan Miller,
Gabe Stotler, and Austen Labarre struck out ten batters and gave up just three walks.
Â
Salem (0-3) jumped out to a strong start in the second inning, striking out all three batters in the top of the inning before taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Junior
Austin Baal tied the game in the top of the fourth, blasting his team-leading third home run over the right-field wall.
Â
The game would require extra innings as neither side would be able to score after the Raider home run.
Â
In the top of the tenth, sophomore
Gio Calamia recorded a double to put a runner in scoring position. Junior
Joe Barbera reached first on a fielder's choice and made it all the way to second while Calamia was caught in rundown and tagged out. A lapse in the Tigers defense allowed Barbera to advance yet again as he slid into third.
Â
Junior
Andrew Chronister batted in Barbera and the winning run, as he dropped a single just over the head of Salem's first baseman.
Â
Gabe Stotler earned the win, allowing no runs and just two hits in three innings of relief.
Â
Pitching the first six innings,
Ethan Miller struck out four batters and allowed only two Tigers to reach on walks.
Â
Austen Labarre earned his second save of the season, striking out the final two batters of the tenth inning.
Â
Chronister helped lead the charge for Shippensburg, registering two hits, an RBI on the game-winning run, and catching three runners stealing.
Â
The Raiders return to action on Saturday as they host Gannon for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
