RECAP: Women’s Indoor T&F posts five provisional efforts at 2023 Bison Opener

Graybill, Lee and McKean once again shine for the Raiders

12/2/2023 9:21:00 PM

Leah Graybill, Sasha Lee and Sara McKean combined to record five NCAA provisional qualifying performances on Saturday as the Shippensburg University women's indoor track & field team opened its 2023-24 season in full at the Bison Opener hosted by Bucknell University.

Graybill won the 200 meters in 24.51 seconds and completed the prelims of the 60-meter dash in 7.62 seconds for a pair of provisional qualifiers. Her time in the prelims of the 60 meters is just .07 seconds off her school record. Her time in the 200 meters is just .34 seconds off her school record in that event.

Lee achieved a provisional qualifier on the track and in the field. In the 60-meter hurdles, Lee finished third in the finals with a time of 8.83 seconds for a new personal best of .09 seconds. She remains fourth all-time in school history for the event.

In field competition, Lee finished second in the triple jump on a top mark of 39 feet, 1 inch – a huge personal best of more than 11 inches. It came on her fifth of six attempts – and followed an opening jump of 39 feet, 0 ½ inches (at the time a new PR) that set the tone for her sequence. She now ranks fourth in school history for the event, moving up two spots with her performance.

Also in the field, McKean won the long jump competition with a top mark of 19 feet, 4 ¼ inches that was achieved on her final attempt. The impressive performance is just less than three inches off her own personal best of 19 feet, 7 ½ inches that currently ranks second all-time in school history.

The Raiders recorded five other performances on the day that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. Aliyah Serrano put forth a strong season debut with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash of 7.68 seconds that is just .02 seconds off her PR (which ranks second in school history). Serrano also ran third in the 200, crossing the finish line in 25.50 seconds, which is just two-tenths of a second off her flat-track best.

Caroline Mastria finished third in the 400 meters, breaking the 60-second mark with a time of 59.70 seconds for a solid season benchmark.

In the field, two newcomers posted PSAC qualifiers in their debut. Ashley Laukus cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet, 2 inches for a fifth-place finish, while Carissa Bender placed eighth in the pole vault after a top clearance of 11 feet, 3 ¾ inches.

The meet ended with an entertaining 4x400-meter relay, in which the Raider quartet of Melanie Barger, Serrano, Graybill and Mastria finished second in a time of 4:02.72. Kutztown was victorious in 3:59.10, while the Raiders edged out Lincoln for the runner-up spot after the Lions finished in 4:03.04.

Shippensburg will be back in action next Saturday at Lehigh.
