SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team won each of the bookend relays of its home opener Wednesday night and also received two individual event victories in competition with IUP at Donald N. Miller Pool. The Crimson Hawks claimed the dual meet by a score of 121.5 – 77.5.
 
Senior Matthew Beard was key in the relays, as his wall work and sprint freestyle swimming enabled the Raiders to out-touch the Crimson Hawks on two occasions. The meet started well for the Raiders as Beard anchored a quartet that featured freshman Mason Koeth, junior Nathan VanNatter and freshman Robbie Ferlick that won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:36.83 – just 0.25 seconds ahead of IUP.
 
It also ended well for Shippensburg, as Koeth, Ferlick, junior Zaidian Van Orden and Beard completed the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.83 – just 0.12 seconds ahead of the Crimson Hawks. Ferlick's split of 21.58 seconds was the fastest recorded by any swimmer in the race.
 
Ferlick and Koeth each won individual events. In the 50-yard freestyle, Ferlick was victorious in 21.91 seconds, while Beard tied for third with a time of 22.37 seconds. The performances were two of the eight individual swims by the Raiders on the night that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
 
Koeth impressed in the 200-yard backstroke, winning in 1:57.59 to surpass the league standard by more than five seconds. Senior Michael Salvatori completed the 200-yard butterfly in a second-place time of 2:01.82.
 
Junior David Johnson was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming 1:48.01, while Van Orden was close behind in 1:48.68. Johnson was also third in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming 5:01.26. VanNatter was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.36 seconds.  
 
Shippensburg returns to action in nine days when it hosts California (Pa.) and Fairmont State for a tri-meet at Donald N. Miller Pool.
