Ariel Jones earned her fourth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week honor of the season after the latest edition of the awards was announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
In a 3-0 week, Jones led the Raiders in all three games, including two 20+ point games. Jones averaged 23.3 points per game and shot 83 percent (20-of-24) at the free-throw line. She totaled 70 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists, 10 steals and two blocks.
Against Clarion, Jones scored 25 points, grabbed four rebounds and had a team-high five steals – one short of her career high. Jones hit four three-pointers, with her first of the night being number 200 of her career.
Against ESU, Jones led all players with 16 points while going 8-of-10 from the charity stripe and breaking the all-time PSAC record in free throws made with 727. She also contributed seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Cal's Miki Glenn made 724 free throws from 2013-17.
Defensively, Jones helped the Raiders hold ESU's top scorer, Ryan Weise, the PSAC's most accurate three-point shooter (57.0 percent), to 1-of-6 from behind the arc. SU also held the Warriors to their lowest overall three-point percentage (23.8) of the season.
At Edinboro, Jones led the team with 29 points, her seventh 20+ point game this season. Jones started the night with only seven points since she was in foul trouble by the end of the first quarter. She came back with 22 points in the second half, going 4-of-7 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. It helped SU turn a two-point halftime deficit into a double-digit road win and SU had a 30-point third quarter, its most points in a quarter this season (she hit three 3's in the third). Jones added three steals, four assists and two rebounds.
Jones is now second all-time in PSAC career points with 2,305 points, surpassing Valerie Walker of Cheyney (1978-82).
Jones leads the PSAC in scoring and ranks third in the nation (22.6 points per game). She is also Division II's active career leader in points (2,235), scoring average (23.0), free throws made (714) and free throw attempts (881).
It is the fourth time this season and the 15th time in Jones' career that she has been named the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week. She also earned eight PSAC East Freshman of the Week awards during the 2017-18 season before the conference discontinued the Freshman of the Week award.
