Shippensburg University men's basketball graduate
Dom Sleva and senior
Carlos Carter made program history, becoming the first duo to reach the 1,000 points plateau in the same game during the Raiders' 79-70 triumph over the Edinboro Fighting Scots Saturday on the road.
Â
Shippensburg (7-6, 5-2 PSAC) saw Sleva and Carter combine for 53 points to become the 36th and 37th players in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Carter exploded for 31 points, on 57.1 percent shooting and 60 percent (3-of-5) from three-point range. Sleva, meanwhile, notched his NCAA Division II-leading ninth double-double, scoring 22 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Â
Edinboro (4-8, 2-5 PSAC) made a second half run to cut the Raider lead to just a single point but did not come any closer. Point guard Naim Miller paced the Fighting Scots with 20 points and 4 assists in the contest.
Â
Sleva, needing just two points for 1,000, got the milestone out of the way early, converting off a run-out for the Raiders second basket of the game.
Â
The Fighting Scots kept it close in the first half, staying within four points at halftime, 34-30.
Â
Carter, needing 14 points to reach 1,000, eclipsed the milestone with a deep three in the opening moments of the second half. A quick 8-0 spurt by the senior opened up the Raiders' first double-digit lead at 42-32.
Â
The Fighting Scots followed with a run that cut the margin to one, 44-43, with 13:58 remaining, before key buckets from graduate
Luke Nedrow, Carter and redshirt senior
Rashon Johnson stretched the cushion back to six, 55-44.
Â
The Raiders pulled away from that point forward. Redshirt sophomore
Andrew Recchia provided the exclamation point on the win, picking the pocket of the opposing point guard and swooping in for an and-1 layup that put the visitors back up double-digits with two minutes left, 72-60.
Â
Shippensburg had four players reach double figures in scoring. Johnson finished with 12 points and Recchia chimed in with 10.
Â
Forward Kierell Green added 19 points and five boards for Edinboro.
Â
Shippensburg remains on the road next week, heading to West Chester to take on the Golden Rams Wednesday. Tip-off from Hollinger Field House is set for 7:30 p.m.
