Despite having to forfeit bouts at two separate weight classes, the Shippensburg University wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 in dual meets, and at times dominated the opposition during a successful Saturday at the Millersville Duals.
Â
Shippensburg (9-6, 1-3 PSAC) defeated American International College, 22-21, Thaddeus Stevens, 43-6, and Camden County Community College, 37-18.
Â
The Raiders spotted all three of their opponents a 12-0 advantage thanks to forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds, but the team's healthy wrestlers came through in a big way, earning bonus points in 17 of their 20 wins.
Â
In a close opening dual meet against American International, graduate
Avery Shay and freshman
Owen Koch earned major decisions at 157 and 184 pounds, and freshman
Kyler Everly earned a tech fall victory at 165 to open the door for an SU comeback.
Â
The Raiders still trailed 21-19 heading into the final matchup at 285 pounds, where redshirt-junior
Danny Scheib had no trouble with the Yellow Jackets' Andrew Bumpus, recording four takedowns enroute to a match-clinching 8-4 victory.
Â
The other two matchups were all Raiders.
Â
Pins from Shay, Everly, Koch and freshman 197-pounder
Trey Shoemaker, as well as tech falls from freshman
Mike Trainor and redshirt-sophomore
Nyiem Flucas contributed to what was a lopsided victory over Thaddeus Stevens College.
Â
Sophomore
Connor Livingston picked up his first victory of the season at heavyweight, recording a 3-2 decision over Thaddeus Stevens wrestler Brett Fick.
Â
In the finale, graduate
Al Miscovich helped to erase an early deficit with an 18-1 tech fall win at 141 pounds. Shay later picked up his third win of the day with a 44-second fall against Camden County's David Barber, Shoemaker earned a pin at 197, and Scheib wrapped up a perfect outing for himself and the team with a tech fall win at 285.
Â
Everly, Miscovich and Koch joined Shay with three wins Saturday.
Â
The Raiders return to action Wednesday, February 1 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) dual meet against the East Stroudsburg Warriors. Wrestling from Heiges Field House is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
