Jazmin Petrantonio was named Wednesday afternoon to the 2021-22 Division II Academic All-America ® At-Large Third Team, an award that recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
Petrantonio graduated in May with a double major in management (concentration in international management) and accounting and a 3.48 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
It is the first time that an SU Field Hockey player has been named to the Academic All-America ® At-Large Team since Lucy Kauffman was honored June 2015. Petrantonio is joined on this year's Academic All-America ® At-Large Team by fellow teammates
Jenna Sluymer and
Tori Albright.
It is the first time since 2005 that three Raiders from the same sport were recognized as part of the Academic All-America ® Team. That year, three SU Softball players were honored: Liz Corr, Anna Corr, and Jaime Dacey. Albright, Sluymer and Petrantonio are the first SU Academic All-Americans ® in the At-Large category since Gracee Tothero of Women's Swimming in 2019-20.
A two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Player of the Year (2021 and 2018), Petrantonio is the third Raider to be named the NFHCA National Player of the Year and the second Raider to earn it twice. Bre White won the award in 2012 and 2013, and Kristina Taylor was SU's inaugural recipient in 2010.
Wednesday's announcement brings Petrantonio's postseason awards total to 12. Petrantonio was previously selected to the NFHCA All-America First Team and the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Team. She was named the NFHCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year, PSAC Athlete of the Year, the PSAC Tournament MVP, the NCAA Tournament MVP and was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team, the NFHCA All-Academic Team, the NFHCA Senior Team, and 2021-22 Academic All-District 2 ® At-Large Team. Petrantonio has also been nominated for the 2021-22 Honda Division II Athlete of the Year Award.
A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Petrantonio led the nation in goals per game (1.85), points per game (4.2), goals (37) and points (84). She also totaled 10 assists. Petrantonio scored or assisted in 19 of SU's 20 games this season; the only game in which she did not record a point was in the national semifinal.
In the 2021 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament, Petrantonio helped Shippensburg to its sixth national championship (fifth NCAA national championship) and its fourth in the last five seasons. She scored the second goal in the National Championship Game victory over West Chester and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships.
Petrantonio concluded her historic career with 106 career goals, third-most in NCAA Division II history. In her 79 career games with the Raiders, Petrantonio totaled 248 career points (106 goals, 36 assists) and 29 game-winning goals. She also finished her career as the leading scorer in the history of the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships, having scored 10 career goals in eight career NCAA Tournament games.
The Academic All-America ® Team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). While most of the Academic All-America ® teams focus on specific sports such as football, basketball or volleyball, the At-Large category features a collection of several sports – making Petrantonio's selection especially prestigious.
The women's At-Large category includes the sports of beach volleyball, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo.
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 Division II Academic All-America® program.
Petrantonio becomes the seventh SU field hockey player to earn Academic All-America honors, joining
Jenna Sluymer (2021-22),
Tori Albright (2021-22), Lucy Kauffman (2014-15), Bre White (2013-14), Kristen Brooks (2010-11) and Stacy Bryner (1997).
