The Shippensburg University softball team concluded the regular season with a sweep over Mansfield in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Saturday with a score of 8-2 in the opener and 12-1 (five innings) in Game 2 on a sunny afternoon at Helen Lutes Field.
Shippensburg (30-16, 11-5 PSAC East) totaled 21 hits while keeping Mansfield (5-22, 1-14) to only 11 hits in the doubleheader. All nine Raider starters had at least one hit in the doubleheader, including sophomore
Morgan Lindsay hitting a grand slam home run in Game 2.
Freshman
Emma Mackulin went 5-for-7 with two RBIs in the doubleheader. Sophomore
Alyssa Nehlen went 4-for-7, including a double, and five RBIs. Lindsay had three hits with five RBIs and drew two walks, while fellow sophomore
Taylor Myers had three hits, one RBI and drew a walk.
Junior
Hannah Marsteller had two hits, three RBIs and a hit by pitch. Freshman
Katelyn Minney had one RBI, reached base five times, and stole three bases. Senior
Morgan DeFeo and freshman
Morgan Brumbaugh each had an RBI and a walk.
Shippensburg ends the regular season seeded No. 2 in the PSAC Eastern Division standings, which secures them a playoff matchup against Western Division No. 3 seed Mercyhurst on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Quakertown, Pa.
Game 1: Shippensburg 8, Mansfield 2
Shippensburg struck first with two runs in the first inning after three consecutive walks (DeFeo, Lindsay, Minney) and a two-run single to right center by Nehlen. Mansfield reduced the deficit to one run in the bottom of the first after a bases-loaded walk.
The Raiders scored one run in the second inning. Mackulin bunt singled and scored off a DeFeo single up the middle. SU added two more runs in the next inning with back-to-back RBI-doubles from Nehlen and Brumbaugh.
Shippensburg scored three more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 8-2 victory, starting with back-to-back walks from Minney and senior
Hannah Johnson. SU scored off a wild pitch, and a two-run single to right center by Mackulin.
Freshman
Alicia Ball started in the circle for the Raiders and threw 2.1 innings. Relief pitcher sophomore
Emma Flattery threw 4.2 innings and got the win for the Raiders, her sixth straight. She allowed four hits and recorded five strikeouts.
Game 2: Shippensburg 12, Mansfield 1
Shippensburg started Game 2 with an RBI-single by Lindsay, and Nehlen brought home a run when she hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Lindsay smashed a grand slam home run to left center field in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
SU scored four more runs in the next inning, starting with an RBI-single up the middle by Myers to send Johnson home, who reached base on a Mountaineer error. Marsteller hit a sacrifice fly to bring Brumbaugh home. The Raiders scored another run off a Mountaineer error, and the fourth run from a Nehlen single up the middle.
In the top of the fourth inning, Marsteller hit a two-run single to left center to score Myers and Mackulin. Mackulin reached based on a single and Myers drew a walk.
Redshirt-sophomore
Maddie Uschock pitched a complete game for the Raiders. She threw 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two Mountaineers, including the last out in the fifth inning.
