RECAP: Softball splits road doubleheader at Lock Haven

Raiders win 6-3 in Game 2 after a 5-2 loss in Game 1

The Shippensburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Lock Haven, dropping the opener 5-2 and then winning Game 2, 6-3, on a sunny Friday at Lawrence Field.

Shippensburg (25-15, 6-4 PSAC East) totaled 23 hits in the doubleheader while keeping Lock Haven (15-16, 4-8) to just four hits each game. Nine of the ten Raider starters had at least one hit in the doubleheader, including five hits from freshman Katelyn Minney; she was 4-for-4 in Game 2 with a triple and two RBIs.

Sophomores Morgan Lindsay and Alyssa Nehlen and senior Lacey Hunter had three hits each and at least one RBI each. Hunter had two doubles in Game 2, while Lindsay had three RBIs.

Shippensburg will celebrate its Seniors tomorrow as they face rival West Chester at 1 p.m. for a conference doubleheader at Robb Field.

Game 1: Lock Haven 5, Shippensburg 2

Shippensburg struck first with two runs in the top of the third. Hunter singled to left field and junior Hannah Marsteller forced a walk to have two runners on base with two outs. Lindsay delivered a two-run single to left field for a short-lived 2-0 lead.

Lock Haven then scored three runs on just one hit. The Bald Eagles scored off a wild pitch and a two-run double for a 3-2 lead. In the next inning, Lock Haven scored two more runs from an RBI-triple and a bases-loaded walk. SU had a chance in the top of the seventh to even the score, loading the bases with two outs, but a pop fly to the Bald Eagle second baseman gave Lock Haven the 5-2 victory.

Freshman Alicia Ball started in the circle for the Raiders and threw 3.1 innings and struck out three Bald Eagles. Relief pitcher, junior Hannah Palinkas, threw 2.2 innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two.

Game 2: Shippensburg 6, Lock Haven 3

Shippensburg took a one-run lead in the first inning. Marsteller singled to right field and ended up scoring the first run on a Lindsay double down the left-field line. The Raiders scored one more run from an RBI-single to shortstop by Minney that scored DeFeo, who drew a walk to reach base.

In the fourth inning, Hunter hit one of her two doubles through the left side and scored on a Marsteller single through the left side. Hunter's second double was in the same direction and brought home fellow senior Hannah Johnson, who reached based on a fielder's choice.

SU scored two more runs in the sixth inning. DeFeo singled through the right side and ended up scoring from an RBI-triple by Minney to right field. Nehlen then hit an RBI-single to shortstop to bring Minney home and give the Raiders a 6-0 lead.

Lock Haven, looking for a late comeback, reduced the deficit to four runs after a pair of doubles in the bottom of the sixth scored two runs. The Bald Eagles scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, before a strikeout by sophomore Emma Flattery ended the game.

Flattery threw a complete game, her sixth of the season. She allowed four hits, no walks and struck out five Bald Eagles, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
