RECAP: Softball gets sweep at Chestnut Hill, 7-0 and 11-2

Raiders slug five home runs; Leber has a seven-RBI performance and the win in Game 2

The Shippensburg University softball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday with a sweep at Chestnut Hill, defeating the Griffins by scores of 7-0 and 11-2 (six innings) on a sunny afternoon in Philadelphia.

Shippensburg (10-4) hit five home runs in the doubleheader and got solid pitching from sophomores Emma Flattery and Maelynn Leber. Flattery threw a five-hit shutout in Game 1 with eight strikeouts and no walks, while Leber threw 5.1 innings of relief for the win in Game 2, allowing just an unearned run and striking out three.

Leber was also a big bat, with four hits and nine RBIs on the day. She delivered a pair of RBI-singles in Game 1 and launched two homers in Game 2 – a grand slam in the third inning and a three-run shot in the sixth.

Her seven-RBI performance in Game 2 is the most RBIs in a single game by a Raider in 17 years (Sarah Costa had seven against West Chester on March 26, 2005).

A three-run first inning in Game 1 included a two-run home run by freshman Katelyn Minney. Freshman Emma Mackulin also delivered two RBIs in the win.

SU fell behind 1-0 after the first inning of Game 2 but responded with three runs in the second courtesy of back-to-back home runs – a two-run shot by sophomore Morgan Lindsay and the first collegiate home run for freshman Morgan Brumbaugh. Leber's home runs helped give the Raiders distance on the scoreboard to ultimately defeat Chestnut Hill (2-10) in six innings.

Shippensburg is scheduled to face IUP and Pitt-Johnstown on the road this weekend. Check shipraiders.com for any updates to the schedule.
