GO TO ELEVEN: Men’s Indoor Track & Field wins 2022 PSAC Championship

Dailey, Kirk win major awards; SU posts 120-point victory margin

2/27/2022 9:20:00 PM

The Shippensburg University men's indoor track & field team won the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday, its 11th consecutive league title, and etched its name in the record books in the process.

Shippensburg scored 210 points – the most accumulated by a team in a 17-event conference championship and just 3.5 points shy of the overall conference championships scoring record held by the 2012 Raiders (213.5 points in 18 events; the 4x800-meter relay is no longer contested).

The 120-point margin of victory is the second largest in league history. The 2012 Raiders posted a 129.5-point victory over second-place Slippery Rock (213.5-84).

Shippensburg became the third team in conference history to score a point in every event, joining the 2014 Raiders and the 2016 Raiders. SU had a Top 5 finisher in 16-of-17 events; the 2014 Raiders remain the only team in PSAC history to have a Top 5 finisher in every event.

The Raiders won eight event championships (including both relays) and had a total of 17 All-PSAC (Top 3) performances (25 All-PSAC finishes overall if each leg of both relays is included). SU scored 10 or more points in 12 of 17 events, including 28 points in the 5K on Saturday and 24 points in the weight throw on Saturday. The 52 combined points from those two events is a higher total than achieved by eight of the other 11 teams in competition.

Drew Dailey was named the Most Valuable Athlete of the 2022 PSAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships. Dailey won the PSAC championship in the mile, anchored the distance medley relay to a PSAC championship on Saturday, ran on the 4x400-meter relay that won a PSAC championship, and finished second in the 800 meters. It is the second consecutive indoor conference championship that Dailey has been named the Most Valuable Athlete.

Eric Kirk was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the 2022 PSAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships. Kirk won the PSAC championship in the 200 meters, anchored the 4x400-meter relay to a PSAC championship, and finished second in the 60-meter dash.

Chayce Macknair claimed his second individual conference championship in as many days on Sunday, winning the 3K title in 8:33.45 for a five-second victory. Macknair began the weekend Saturday with the 5K title. Macknair, who redshirted in the 2020 indoor season, finished his debut indoor conference championship going 2-for-2 in distance events.

Shippensburg has now won 14 of the 20 PSAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships in history, including every conference championship that has been contested since 2011.

SUNDAY EVENT RECAP:

The day on the track began with Dailey defending his league championship in the mile, running 4:21.53 to defeat Lock Haven's Gage Krall by two seconds. It was followed by Isaiah Barnes (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) posting his first individual PSAC scoring performance with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, running 8.75 seconds.

The 400 meters provided eight points. Stephon Brown ran third in 49.74 seconds to achieve his second straight All-PSAC performance in the event; Brown finished second in 2020. Freshman James Jaisingh delivered a seventh-place time of 50.34 to score in his debut conference meet.

The 60-meter dash was an exciting race claimed by Kutztown's Tyeshawn Worrell in 6.80 seconds. Kirk ran second in 6.91 seconds, and Brown took eighth in 7.29 seconds. Brown was attempting a difficult double, having just run in the 400 meters about 15 minutes prior.

Kirk claimed the 200-meter conference title as the only runner to break 22 seconds – his winning time was 21.85 seconds. His pair of individual All-PSAC runs gave him two scoring performances in two meets in both the 60 and 200 and mark significant improvement to his place-finishes from his freshman season – Kirk was sixth in the 60 and eighth in the 200 in 2020.

Sandwiched in between the 60 and the 200 was Dailey's attempt at the mid-distance double. Dailey put forth a valiant effort in the 800 meters and placed second with a time of 1:53.84, achieving his second All-PSAC finish in the event after winning the league title in 2020. Ryan Scicchitano scored in his debut conference meet with a fifth-place finish of 1:56.42. IUP's Kendall Branan set a meet record and facility record (1:52.59) to claim the 2022 league title.

While the track action was occurring, Shippensburg was also faring quite well in the field. Shamar Jenkins became a three-time All-PSAC performer in the triple jump, finishing second with a top mark of 47 feet, 8 inches. It accompanies PSAC championships in the event in 2019 and 2020. Jenkins was consistent with strong jumps on Sunday; all six of his attempts spanned between 46 and 47 feet.

Mo Whittle, who won the long jump yesterday, placed seventh with a top mark of 44 feet, 2 ½ inches. Jacob Cramer, who entered the weekend having competed in the triple jump just twice collegiately, recorded a personal best for an eighth-place scoring finish on a top mark of 44 feet, 0 ¾ inches.

Jordan Winslow and Kenny Rhyne continued their scoring runs in the high jump. Winslow finished second, equaling his personal best with a top clearance of 6 feet, 7 ½ inches that came on his first attempt at the height. Rhyne finished fourth, with his top clearance being 6 feet, 5 ½ inches.

Winslow is now a three-time PSAC placewinner in the high jump, with Sunday's performance being his first All-PSAC finish indoors. He previously finished eighth in 2020 and sixth in 2019. Rhyne finished seventh in 2020.

Pat Maloney and Logan Parker made it to the awards stand in the shot put. Maloney recorded a new indoor personal best of 51 feet, 1 inch for an All-PSAC, third-place finish. It's his third time surpassing the 50-foot mark collegiately. Parker placed sixth in his debut conference meet; his best throw traveled 49 feet, 3 ½ inches.

Robert Lissner and Mason Boyd each recorded All-PSAC finishes in the heptathlon, placing second and third respectively in their debut indoor conference championship. Lissner, who placed third in the open pole vault on Saturday, shattered his PR with a score of 4,544 points to best Boyd by just seven points.

Lissner recorded new indoor personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (9.14 seconds), high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), shot put (32 feet, 9 ¾ inches) and 60-meter dash (7.38 seconds) over the course of the weekend en route to his impressive score. Boyd came within .01 seconds of his PR in the 60-meter hurdles (8.94 seconds).

Macknair's 3K championship was the penultimate event on the track and gave him the coveted distance double. Aiden Gonder ran third in 8:47.42, capping off an excellent debut conference championship weekend that featured two All-PSAC finishes (Gonder was second to Macknair in the 5K on Saturday). Hayden Hunt also found the awards stand in the 3K, placing seventh in 8:49.12 after running third in the 5K on Saturday.

Wrapping the meet with the figurative bow were Brown, Jaisingh, Dailey and Kirk running the 4x400-meter relay in 3:20.16 for a convincing victory of more than four seconds.

The two-day meet was held at Edinboro University's Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome. Due to facility issues, temperatures were suboptimal over the course of the two-day meet.
