KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team fell on a late goal from No. 5 Millersville in the last two minutes, as the Marauders eliminated the Raiders in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Semifinals, 2-1, on a cold Friday at Andre Reed Stadium.
Shippensburg (15-3) had its lone goal from PSAC Freshman of the Year
Agus Garibaldi in the first three minutes of the second quarter off a rebound save from the Marauders goalkeeper, Kerstin Koons.
Millersville (16-4) scored early in the first quarter from PSAC First Team forward, Kate Strickland. The Raiders equalized the game in the second quarter from Garibaldi. The game was back and forth with the Raiders having their best performance in the second quarter, having a 3-1 shots on goal advantage and keeping the Marauders from having a corner.
The game came down to the final 20 minutes. The Raiders had a chance late in the third quarter to take the lead, with a breakaway shot by sophomore
Yasmin De Meyer from a pass by sophomore
Tess Jedeloo. However, Koons was able to stop the goal with a back-heel save.
The Marauders then had five consecutive penalty corners with less than five minutes left in the game, but SU's defense was able to prevent them from scoring. SU would have its own penalty corner with less than two minutes left, but was unable to take advantage.
With 1:45 left in the game, Millersville converted a penalty corner. Marauders' PSAC Third Team honoree Codi Bollinger was able to find the back of the cage off a pass by PSAC Second Team defender Ashlynn Lennon.
Millersville outshot Shippensburg 14-9 and had a 13-9 advantage in penalty corners, including an 8-3 fourth quarter penalty corners advantage.
Shippensburg now awaits the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 3 p.m. to see if it qualifies for the NCAA National Tournament.
NOTE:
- This is the ninth straight one-goal game between Millersville and Shippensburg in post games.
- The Raiders are now 19-29 all-time in the PSAC Championships dating back to 1979. The Raiders are now 13-16 in PSAC Semifinals.
