Jones named Conference Challenge MVP, Pettis All-Tournament

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's basketball team fought hard to overcome a physical matchup to defeat Bowie State, 51-46, on Saturday night to cap off the 2022 Conference Challenge from Heiges Field House.
 
Shippensburg (2-0) was tied 44-44 with less than 1:40 left in the game, when junior Treasure George hit a clutch three-pointer to give SU back the lead and ultimately led to a victory.
 
Senior Ariel Jones, named the 2022 Conference Challenge MVP, scored 12 points and made 10-of-13 at the free throw line. She added eight rebounds, two assists and three steals.
 
Senior Lauren Pettis also earned All-Tournament honors by recording her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds, along with an assist, two blocks and two steals. George had 11 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal, and drew eight fouls.
 
Sophomore Abbie Miller ended the night with seven points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Sophomore Taja Colbert added a team-high four assists, four points, four rebounds.
 
SU started the game on a 10-3 run after four minutes of play in the first quarter, however, Bowie State (1-1) rallied back and kept the first quarter close with a late three-pointer shot by Mia Smith, 13-11. The Bulldogs tied the game three times in the second quarter and took the lead with three minutes left. The Raiders able to tie the game with a jumper from junior Carolina Sanchez and a layup from George to take a 23-21 lead. At halftime, Bowie State had committed 18 fouls, and had 14 turnovers, while Shippensburg had nine fouls and six turnovers.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 12-10 in the third quarter as they capitalized from the line going 4-of-9. Shippensburg had its best field goal shooting in the fourth quarter, and only had two turnovers. SU scored 20 points off turnovers, while Bowie had 21 points off the bench.
 
Shippensburg returns to action when they travel to Jefferson on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
