Drew Dailey broke a 12-year-old school record in the 800 meters on Saturday, the signature performance in a solid day of action for the Shippensburg University men's indoor track & field team at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge contested at Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility and Horace Ashenfelter III Track.
Dailey ran a seventh-place time of 1:50.88 to crush his own personal best by nearly three full seconds and eclipse the SU record of Ed Buck (1:52.66 in 2010) by nearly two full seconds. It's a time that is just 0.26 seconds shy of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) all-time record of IUP's Sean Straumann (1:50.62 in 2007) and puts him eighth on the NCAA leaderboard (pending other results nationally this weekend).
It was one of two NCAA provisional qualifiers on the day for the Raiders, as
Stephon Brown once again moved rather swiftly in the 60-meter dash. His seventh-place time of 6.83 seconds is just .08 seconds off his school record set in December that still has him tied for fourth on the national leaderboard.
Shippensburg totaled 13 performances that satisfied the PSAC's auto qualifying standard.
Chayce Macknair completed the 3K in 8:27.83 to move atop the conference leaderboard in the event, and
Aiden Gonder and
Jacob Mavretic ran respective conference qualifiers of 8:49.58 and 8:55.23 to get situated among the PSAC's Top 10.
Ian Sherlock delivered a solid mile of 4:22.11 to slot into third in the conference standings while the 4x400-meter relay of
Eric Kirk, Brown,
James Jaisingh and Dailey moved atop the conference leaderboard with a fourth-place time of 3:19.56 that featured a 48.1-second split by Brown.
In the field,
Pat Maloney enhanced his status atop the PSAC standings in the weight throw by recording a new collegiate best of 56 feet, 9 ¼ inches – the second straight week he has increased his PR. Maloney's first two 17-meter weight throws of his career have occurred in the last two weeks. Also on Saturday, Maloney improved his season best in the shot to 48 feet, 4 inches.
Shamar Jenkins and
Mo Whittle picked up their conference qualifiers in the triple jump. Jenkins jumped 47 feet, 1 inch – the second-best league mark thus far – while Whittle had a mark of 44 feet, 11 ¾ inches.
Brooks Bear and
Josh Herbster also hit the league mark in the weight, with Bear's throw of 51 feet, 3 ¾ inches a new season best.
Shippensburg heads to Alvernia next weekend to compete in the Plex Shootout.
