SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team honored its six seniors Friday afternoon and won eight events in its final home dual meet of the regular season, a 109.5-73.5 victory over Edinboro at Donald N. Miller Pool.
Shippensburg bookended its successful day with relay victories, beginning with the senior quartet of
Andrew Hale,
Matt Bochanski,
Vin Salvatore and
Trevor Woolwine succeeding in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.72.
To cap the meet, Woolwine led a group of four that featured Hale, freshman
Zaidian Van Orden and senior
Anthony Caravaggio that won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.75.
Six different men claimed an event victory on the day. Redshirt-sophomore
JC Greenwood led a group of Raiders that went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:47.09. Graduate
Eric Zimmerman swam 1:48.75, and freshman
Nathan VanNatter took third in 1:49.04. The times were three of the team's 15 on the day that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
Hale made a bid for the pool record in the 200-yard IM, claiming gold with a time of 1:57.37. Salvatore was second in 2:02.64. Woolwine posted a strong victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.90 seconds, and Bochanski won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.07.
Junior
Elijah Zinn won the 50-yard sprint freestyle with a time of 22.40 seconds; sophomore
Matthew Beard was third in 22.67 seconds. Van Orden won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.84 seconds.
Other conference cuts included juniors
David Bussard and
Michael Hannig in the 100-yard backstroke posting respective times of 54.54 seconds and 56.52 seconds. Greenwood swam the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.88 and Zimmerman completed the event in 4:58.84. Freshman
David Johnson swam SU's fastest time in the 1,650-yard freestyle, posting a second-place effort of 17:16.44.
Before the meet, SU honored its six seniors: Bochanski, Caravaggio, Hale, Salvatore,
Christian Sawyer and Woolwine.
Shippensburg will have one more competition before the conference championships in mid-February. The Raiders will travel to Navy on Saturday, Jan. 29.
