SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team was unable to get past its divisional nemesis West Chester again on Saturday, as the Raiders concluded the regular season by dropping both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Robb Field. The Golden Rams won Game 1 in five innings, 12-1, and rallied to take Game 2 in eight innings, 13-12.
Shippensburg (22-16, 16-16 PSAC) entered the weekend needing a win to put itself in position to secure a postseason berth. In Game 2, the Raiders rallied with a five-run sixth inning to flip an 8-7 deficit into a 12-8 lead. For the second straight day, however, West Chester (24-12, 20-12) countered in its final at-bat, scoring four in the seventh to even the score and then another in the eighth to ultimately claim a sweep of the doubleheader.
As a result, Shippensburg finishes the regular season as the No. 5 seed in the PSAC Eastern Division, one spot shy of qualification for the upcoming league tournament. In next week's quarterfinals, Kutztown (No. 1 seed) will host East Stroudsburg (No. 4 seed), and Shepherd (No. 2 seed) will host West Chester (No. 3 seed).
In Saturday's doubleheader, the Raiders cranked out 16 hits and struck out just three times.
Hannah Marsteller,
Courtney Coy and
Maelynn Leber all had three hits, while
Lacey Hunter and
Morgan DeFeo had two.
Marsteller hit a two-run double, an RBI-single and had two sacrifice flies. Her five RBIs extended her single-season school record to 64. Coy homered again, bringing her season total to 10. Eleven different Raiders scored at least one run – including three pinch runners.
Overall in the four-game series, Shippensburg and West Chester combined for 90 runs, 105 hits (including 31 extra-base hits), 156 total bases, 28 walks and 18 errors.
