RECAP: Softball splits road doubleheader at Mansfield

SU wins Game 1, 5-3; Mansfield wins Game 2, 6-4

The Shippensburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Mansfield on Friday, winning the opener 5-3 but dropping the nightcap 6-4 at Helen Lutes Field.

Shippensburg (20-14, 14-12 PSAC East) got four more hits from Hannah Marsteller and 7.1 shutout innings from freshman pitcher Maelynn Leber. The Raiders had 15 hits on the day but also left 15 runners on base.

Mansfield (3-19, 3-19) got two home runs and five RBIs from shortstop Joelle Snyder to snap an 11-game losing streak with the Game 2 win. The Mountie victory also snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Raiders.

In Game 1, the score was tied 3-3 through five innings when Courtney Coy homered on the first pitch of the sixth inning to give the Raiders the lead. Later in the inning, an RBI-single by freshman Taylor Myers plated Lacey Hunter for an insurance run.

Leber pitched the final six innings of the opener for the win, allowing five hits and two walks and striking out two. She also pitched 1.1 innings of relief in the nightcap.

Myers had three hits and two RBIs in the doubleheader. Coy also totaled three hits. Marsteller hit two doubles among her four hits. Alyssa Nehlen had a two-run double.

Shippensburg hosts Mansfield at NOON tomorrow at Robb Field.
