RECAP: Softball drops PSAC East doubleheader at East Stroudsburg

Raiders fall by scores of 5-1 and 7-2; total 15 hits in the doubleheader

The Shippensburg University softball team dropped both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on Friday, falling to the Warriors by scores of 5-1 and 7-2 at Creekview Park.

Shippensburg (2-4, 1-3 PSAC East) totaled 15 hits in the doubleheader but could only scratch three runs across the plate, stranding 12 runners. East Stroudsburg (5-1, 2-0) benefitted from five Raider errors and eight walks. The Warriors had 14 hits on the day and did not commit an error.

Freshman Alyssa Nehlen had three hits, including two in the opener. Four other Raiders had a hit in both games of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Hannah Marsteller hit a double in both games – giving her at least one extra-base hit in each of the first six games of the season.

The Raiders used four pitchers, with freshman Maelynn Leber starting Game 1 and sophomore Tressa Kagarise starting Game 2.

Freshman Hanna Phillips pitched in relief in both games, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over four combined innings of work. Phillips struck out five.

Game 1
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead after one inning and never trailed in the opener. The lone SU run came on an RBI-double by Nehlen in the fifth inning that scored sophomore Morgan DeFeo, who had singled in the previous at-bat. DeFeo walked to lead off the game; she and Nehlen reached base twice in the contest.

Leber threw 4.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. She struck out six. Phillips got the final five outs, four via strikeout, and allowed just one walk.

Game 2
Shippensburg held a 2-1 lead through three innings, but a five-run fourth inning swung the momentum into ESU's favor. The Raiders used three pitchers in the inning – Kagarise began it, freshman Brianna Small entered in relief, and Phillips came in to get the final out.

Kagarise threw 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five. Phillips pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing an unearned run, a hit and a walk with one strikeout.
