SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University field hockey team rallied Friday with a fourth-quarter, game-tying goal and an overtime goal to defeat Millersville, 2-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Field Hockey semifinal on a sunny afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (17-0) got its goals from PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year and All-PSAC First Team defender graduate
Caitlyn Wink and PSAC Athlete of the Year and All-PSAC First Team midfielder senior
Jazmin Petrantonio.
After a scoreless first half, Millersville (15-4) opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal on a penalty corner by All-PSAC First Team forward Hannah Brown. A pass from All-PSAC Third Team defender Ashlynn Lennon set up Brown's goal. It marked the first time since the second game of the season that Shippensburg trailed at any point, and the goal ended a six-game shutout streak for the Raiders that lasted 396:30.
The Raiders responded in the fourth quarter from a back-stick rebound goal from Wink – her third goal of the season. An initial shot by senior
Jenna Sluymer was saved by All-PSAC First Team goalkeeper Kerstin Koons that led to the rebound by Wink that she lofted over the keeper and just inside the left post.
After 60 minutes of play, the Raiders faced their second overtime of the year. SU also went to overtime with Kutztown on Oct. 9.
SU earned a corner just over three minutes into overtime, and after a MU false start gave the Raiders a 5-on-2 advantage on the corner, Sluymer sent a pass to Petrantonio for the golden goal.
Shippensburg finished with a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 15-4 advantage in corners. Koons made a career-high 11 saves for Millersville and the Marauders also got a defensive save from Caroline Griffin. Freshman goalkeeper
Lindsay Tripodo had two saves for the Raiders.
Shippensburg will host West Chester at 1 p.m. Sunday in the PSAC Field Hockey Championship game at Robb Sports Complex.
